MAGNETIC RESONANCE
SPECTROSCOPY

DECEMBER 2018

- Can eliminate the normal overwhelming signal (non-deuterated solvents will easily
overshadow any signals from the sample)
- To lock frequency of the spectrometer (In polysaccharide, the deuterated solvent
can exchange the protons of the OH-groups with deuterium, making the spectra's a
lot easier to interpret)
- Sharpen up the signals and allow larger to be studied
- To avoid swampling by the solvent overlapping

Magnet – Cryamoganets capable of a frequency up to 900 MHz in protons

Probe-head – Where the sample inserted
Transmitter – Radiofrequency (RF) generator and frequency synthesizer. Also capable
as pulse production
Receiver – RF voltage proportional to the transverse magnetization
Computer – Digitizes the information and Fourier transform it to readable data
