The greedy old Spider
There was once a great, big, fat greedy, old spider more than anything else this spider liked to eat. This
greedy old spider lived in the middle of the jungle half way between two villages. One day the people in the
first village decided they would have feast- a feast with every good kind of food they could think of. The feast
would be on Saturday night. Everyone in the village would be there. The people from the village also decided
to invite the greedy old spider to the feast.

The people in the second village also decided to have a great feast. They also planned to have every good
kind of food imaginable- fried plantains, and pounded cassava and rice and greens, and palm butter, and
meat. The feast would be on Saturday night. The people from that village also decided to invite the greedy old
spider. Thus, the messenger told him to come.

“I will come,” said old spider, who always loved to eat. But now spider had a problem. Both the feasts were
on the same day. He must find a way to go to both. He thought and thought. At last, he had an idea. “Please
pull this rope when it is time for the feast,” he said to the people in the village. “We will,” said the people, “we
will pull it when the feast is ready.” “Please pull this rope when it is time for the feast,” said the spider giving
the second rope to the people in the second village. “We will,” said the people. “We will pull it when the feast
is ready.”The spider left one end of the rope in the village, pulling the other end behind him until he reached
the middle of the forest. Then, he tied both of the ropes around his belly. “When I feel a pull on one rope,” he
thought,” I will run to that village and eat. I will eat until I feel a pull on the other rope. Then, I will run to the
other village and eat theirs as well.” With the ropes tied around his middle, spider sat down to wait. He
waited all through the afternoon. While he waited, he got hungrier and hungrier. When both preparations were
completed, the people remembered the spider. They also pulled on the rope he gave them.

When the people in the first villages saw that spider did not come, they pulled the rope harder. When the
people in the second village saw that the spider did not come, they also pulled harder. In both villages the
people pulled and pulled and pulled but still spider did not come.

“Perhaps he does not want to feast with us,” they said. So they started their feasts without him. They ate and
ate until they could eat no more. And they played their music and danced until they could play and dance no
more.

Of course, what happened was this. Spider had felt pull on the rope from the first village. But before he
could move, he had felt a pull on the rope from the second village. He did not know what to do. Then, both
ropes began pulling at once. They pulled harder and harder. The knots on the ropes got tighter and tighter
around spider‟s middle. At last the ropes had stopped pulling. But by that time, the ropes were so tight and
spider was so exhausted that he was unable to move. He fell in a heap on the ground. By the time, Spider was
able to struggle free from the ropes and make it to the first village, the feast had ended. “We are so sorry,” said
the people when the spider arrived,” but when you did not come, he thought perhaps you had other plans. The
food is all gone. There is not one grain of rice left. The spider hurried to the second village. There too the feast
had ended. “Oh spider,” said the people when they saw him, “we pulled and pulled the rope, just as you told
us. Why didn‟t you come? Alas! a single bite is left.” And so, the greedy old spider, who hoped to have two
feasts at once, instead ended up with nothing at all.
