D’S WORDS OF INSPIRATION TO SUDHAMURTHY

Describe the relationship between Tata and Infosys.

Introduction

The text “J.R.D’S Words of Inspiration to Sudha Murthy” narrates how Ms

Sudha Murthy was inspired by J.R.D’s words to start the Infosys venture.
It points out that there is a strong Tata connection to Infosys.

Sudha Murthy comes across an advertisement

Ms Sudha Murthy is the wife of N.R Narayana Murthy, the chairman of the
Infosys. She is now heading the Infosys Foundation. She topped the
graduating class in computer science from the Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore. One day she came across a job advertisement in Feb, 1974.
The advertisement said that Telco( Tata Engineering and Locomotive
Company) wanted bright young graduates. However, to her
disappointment, she found in the footnote it was written “ female
candidates need not apply”. Her ego was deeply hurt. She sent a postcard
to J.R.D asking him how a leading and progressive concern could put such
a restriction.

Sudha Murthy’s selection and appointment

A pleasant surprise awaited Sudha Murthy. Soon she received a telegram

asking her to appear for an interview. Selected as a graduate trainee, she
was first posted in Pune. Later she was shifted to Telco , Jamshedpur. She
was thereafter shifted to Bombay. She had learnt that JRD had himself
intervened in the matter following her letter.

Sudha Murthy meeting with JRD

After having served Telco for eight years, Sudha Murthy wanted to meet
JRD to express her gratitude. As she was going downstairs, he was
climbing upstairs in Bombay House . When she told him that she was
leaving the job, he asked her why she was quitting the job for which she
fought so much. She told that her husband wanted to start the Infosys
Venture. At once JRD turned almost a soothsayer. He said that if she
made lots of money. She should give it back to society from which she
received so much love.

These words of JRD formed a source of inspiration for Infosys Foundation.

Today she manages to run the Infosys Foundation in Karnataka, Andhra
Pradesh, TamilNadu and Orissa with only six hands. So strong has been
the influence of the Tatas that she wanted to have the portraits of
J.N.Tata and JRD Tata.

Social Service and the Infosys Foundation

The Infosys Foundation focuses on two basic things: Education and

Health. It provides infrastructure to the states for building government
hospitals which cater the to the needs of the poor. The foundation among
other things, also donates books to the libraries of the school for the poor
and downtrodden. Sudha Murthy says that the Infosys Foundation focuses
on the poorest of the poor. The chairperson of Infosys Foundation is a
recipient of several international awards for outstanding philanthropic
work. The writer is of the opinion that any other person in the place of
Ms. Sudha Murthy who is simple would be having a very high-flying
lifestyle.
