1. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

Many of us, regardless of age, are fond of chocolates. We eat this delicious food in various
forms –as chocolate bars, ice-creams, cakes, biscuits and almost all other types of desserts.
Chocolate can also be consumed as a drink when added to water or milk. Chocolate was first
used by the Indians living in Central America. They collected the seeds of the cocoa plant.
Cocoa is the main ingredient of chocolate. Once the cocoa seeds were dried and grounded,
the Indians discovered that they contained a bitter powder that acted as refreshment. This
powder was used by sleep-deprived hunters and warriors travelling over rocky land to keep
them alert. Like coffee, cocoa contains caffeine which is addictive. People develop a craving
for it and it becomes a necessity, to be consumed even at a high price. The cocoa did not
appeal to many people because of its bitter taste. Different ways of serving cocoa had to be
discovered. To hide its bitterness, it was mixed with milk, honey, raisins, nuts and sugar. This
led to the discovery of chocolate.
