Meeting 3

Task 1. Match the words on the left to their definition on the right.

Cable structure:

1. Armoured cable a. The innermost part of the cable responsible for

carrying the electrical current.
2. Bedding b. The outer layer of the cable, providing support for the
structures below and protecting them against moisture
and mechanical stress.
3. Conducting material c. An extremely pure form of copper which has been
purified electrolytically to provide the optimal electrical
conductivity.
4. Conductor d. A cable protected by a layer of metal wires or tapes
under the sheath. Depending on the cable structure, the
most typical armouring materials include galvanised
steel, aluminium and copper.
5. Electrolytic copper e. Two insulated wires twisted together. The twisted pair
is a basic element in almost all data transfer and signal
cables.
6. Insulating material f. A layer between the insulation and sheath typically
made of aluminium or copper, providing a path for
earth fault and charging currents. At least one end of
the metallic screen must be earthed.
7. Twisted pair g. A structural layer inside the cable protecting the layer
below. Semiconducting taping, for example, is used as
bedding below the metallic screen, forming a base for
copper wires.
8. Metallic screen h. Any material preventing electrical current from passing
through it. In addition to the actual insulation, insulating
materials are utilised in other layers of the cable.
9. Sheath i. Any material allowing electricity to pass through it. In
addition to the actual conductors, conducting materials
are utilised in many other layers of the cable.

Task 2. Health and Safety in the Workplace
