Lesson 7: Organize Images Using Adobe Bridge
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
- Organize images using Adobe Bridge
- Demonstrate respect for copyright laws; and
- Identify common image file formats.

Adobe Bridge is a software application for managing files on Mac OS and Windows computers.
The following items are the main components of the Adobe Bridge workspace:
1. Application Bar – It provides commands for common task such as navigating the folder hierarchy,
switching workspaces, and searching for files.
2. Path Bar – It show the path for the folder you are viewing and allows you to navigate the directory.
3. Panels:
a) Favorites Panel – It gives you the option to add the folders you usually work on for quicker
access.

b) Folders Panel – It allows you to navigate folders easily because folders are displayed in a
hierarchical layout.

c) Filter Panel – It allows you to sort or filter files that appear in the Content Panel.

d) Collections Panel – It is where you can create, locate, and open collections.

e) Content Panel – It displays the content of the selected folder or collections.

f) Preview Panel – It displays a preview of the selected file.

g) Metadata Panel – It contains information for the selected file such as aperture, shutter speed,
ISO rating, file size, pixel dimension, resolution, camera data, copyright, etc.

h) Keywords Panel – It allows you to add keywords to help you organize your images.
Page 3|
What is Metadata?
Metadata means “data about data” or data that describes other data. The prefix “meta” typically
means “an underlying definition or description” in technology circles.

The Exchangeable Image Format or EXIF is a descriptive data (meta-data) in an image file that
include the date the photo was taken, resolution, shutter speed, focal length and other camera settings.

Note: Adobe Bridge not only can organize images or files but also you can view images in
numbers of ways.

Sorting and Filtering Files

You can sort and filter files that appear in the Content panel. By default, The Adobe Bridge files are
sorted by name. You can also filter files by using the Filter panel.

Note: See Exercise 7.2 on page 84 of the book.

What is Raw File?

RAW file is the most common file format for uncompressed images captured by digital cameras and
Scanners. RAW files are generally large in size because it contains minimally processed image data
with lossless quality. It contains the direct image data from the camera sensors with no loss of quality
and alteration. Basically, this file format is used to store the fullest details of the captured images so
that they can be edited with users taste and preference.

What is Digital Negative (DNG) File?

Digital Negative (DNG) is a publicly available archival format for raw files which are generated by
various digital cameras. This addresses the lack of an open standard for raw files created by individual
camera models and ensures that photographers easily access their files.

Lesson 8: Acquire Images from other Sources
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
- Scan images correctly;
- Recognize and respect copyright laws relating to creating and using photographs; and
- Differentiate image file formats.

From Scanning

A scanner is an input device that scans documents such as photographs and pages of text. When a
document is scanned, it is converted into a digital format. This creates an electronic version of the
document that can be viewed and edited on a computer.

A flatbed scanner is an optical scanner which makes use of a flat surface for scanning documents.

Note: The Scanner is usually connected to the computer Page 6|

through a Universal Serial Bus or USB port.

Driver – is a type of software that instructs the computer

to communicate properly with the device.
From Stock Photography
Stock Photography is a collection of ready-made images that is illustrate different categories such as
corporate shots, fashion, sports, etc. These images can be licensed by subscribers or costumers for a
specific use.

The Copyright Basics

A copyright is a collection of rights that automatically vest to

someone who creates an original work of authorship – like a
literary work, song, movie or software. These rights include the
right to reproduce the work, to prepare derivative works, to
distribute copies, and to perform and display the work publicly.

Copyright Logo

Page 7|
Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic
works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.

Copyright infringement (colloquially referred to as

piracy) is the use of works protected by copyright law
without permission for a usage where such permission
is required, thereby infringing certain exclusive rights
granted to the copyright holder, such as the right to
reproduce, distribute, display or perform the protected
work, or to make derivative works.

Fair Use is the doctrine that brief excerpts of

copyright material may, under certain
circumstances, be quoted verbatim for purposes
such as criticism, news reporting, teaching, and
research, without the need for permission from
or payment to the copyright holder.

A public domain work is a creative work that is not protected by copyright which means it’s free for
you to use without permission. Works in the public domain are those whose intellectual property rights
have expired, have been forfeited, or are inapplicable.

What is WIPO?

The World Intellectual Property Organization is one of

the 15 specialized agencies of the United Nations (UN).
Pursuant to the 1967 Convention Establishing the World
Intellectual Property Organization, WIPO was created to

Page 8|
promote and protect intellectual property (IP) across the world by cooperating with countries as well
as international organizations.

Common Image File Formats

1. Bitmap (.bmp)
BMP or Bitmap Image File is a format developed by
Microsoft for Windows. There is no compression or
information loss with BMP files which allow images to
have very high quality, but also very large file sizes. Due to
BMP being a proprietary format, it is generally
recommended to use TIFF files.

2. JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg)

JPEG, which stands for Joint Photographic
Experts Groups is a “lossy” format meaning
that the image is compressed to make a smaller
file. The compression does create a loss in
quality but this loss is generally not noticeable.
JPEG files are very common on the Internet and
JPEG is a popular format for digital cameras -
making it ideal for web use and non-
professional prints.

3. GIF (.gif)
GIF or Graphics Interchange Format files are widely used for web graphics,
because they are limited to only 256 colors, can allow for transparency, and can
be animated. GIF files are typically small is size and are very portable.

4. PNG (.png)
PNG or Portable Network Graphics files are a lossless image format originally
designed to improve upon and replace the gif format. PNG files are able to
handle up to 16 million colors, unlike the 256 colors supported by GIF.
