Productivity Tools
 Text documents, charts, tables, presentations, creative outputs
 Can be freeware or shareware
Freeware
 Apps and softwares that are free to use for an unlimited
Shareware
 Apps and softwares that are used commercially and copyrighted

The three (3) basic functions of these three productivity tools are:
1. Microsoft Word - writing skills
2. Microsoft Excel – numeracy skills
3. Microsoft PowerPoint – presentation skills
Advanced techniques using Microsoft word: hyperlinks
Hyperlink
 Is a link that will direct you to another page or part of the same document
 Can be a word. A phrase, a symbol or image, a different element in the
document, another hypertext document, a file, or a script

Mail Merge
 Is a word processing feature that allows you to easily create multiple letters,
labels, envelopes, nametags, or catalogue documents to group of people as
stored in a list in a databaseor spreadsheet
 Refers to the book
Advanced techniques using Microsoft powerpoint: an imation and (awan
dijay ppt)
 In the Show Markup tab, check comments, insertions and deletions and
formatting.
 Highlight the part of the O document you would like to comment on and
click new comment
 After, save the edited document as PDF (Portable Document File)
 Click the REFERENCES tab on your MS Word
 Choose the STYLE (MLA, APA, etc)
 Click INSERT CITATION. Add the specifics of your sources.
 You may choose the type of source you have. From books to journals. From
websites to films.
 You may also choose whether you are using the information as a citation
within the body of the document or as a part of the bibliography.
 Go to the page you would like to change the layout of
 Click the Page Layout tab. Click the Breaks tab.
 From the drag down menu, choose Next Page.
 Then, choose the type of layout you would like to do on that page (margin,
orientation, etc.)
Advanced techniques using Microsoft excel
- Excel allows your data to be sorted in a chronological order (descending or
ascending - date, value, alphabetical order)
 Go to home
 Choose the column to be sorted
 Click sort (custom). Choose the parameters

- Excel can also list down small subsets of items based on critea
specified (filter)
 Go to home menu
 Choose the column to be filtered
 Choose the parameters

- This is joining selected cells into one large cell

- Making all contents visible in a cell

Week 3
IMAGING AND DESIGN FOR THE ONLINE ENVIRONMENT

Principles of Graphic and design

 standardize image creation and manipulation using graphic software
 Balance- describes the placement of elements of equal weight on the page.
(symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial)
 Movement- flow of elements in a page (there's a look of action when looking at
the design)
 Unity- Oneness of the elements that creates balance and harmony
 Repetition- consistent and balanced repetition of a design or element
 Proximity- organization and relationship of elements included in the design
 Contrast- combination of opposing characteristics of an element (color, size,
thickness etc.)
 Whitespace- negative space or large margins that allow your design to breathe
within the elements

Infographics
 Also known as data visualization
 is defined by Oxford Dictionary as a
visual image such as a chart or diagram that is used to explain information or data
Principles and guidelines on how to create an infographic

 Thesis/Story
 The subject and the main idea of your infographic must be clear
 Data
 Data must be well-organized and supports the main idea
 Simplicity
 Color, style and illustrations
 Must be able to create your own palette
 Your style must be able to attract readers
 Sources
 You must cite your sources so as to give credibility to your data
 Branding/ Shareability
 Your infographic must be creative and innovative

Image File Formats

 Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)
 popularized in the 1980s as an efficient means to transmit images across data
networks and and on the web (uses basic form of file compression)
 GIF Use for...Simple web graphics with limited colors and share-edged lines.
 Banners
 Charts
 Buttons
 Animation
 Why? GIF files are the smallest size of the four because they are reduced to 256
colors, making for fast-loading visuals.
 Don't use for...
 Photographs
 Detailed imagery
 Why? GIFs don't support a wide range of colors which leads to loss of detail in
files.
 JOINT PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERTS GROUP (JPEG/JPG)
 most popular image format today
 JPG or JPEG is used for a lossy graphic file (can be compressed into smaller
images)
 GIF VS JPG -Limited colors can lead to grainy photographs
 JPG Use for...
 Photographs online
 Why? JPGs support a full spectrum of colors while maintaining a relatively low
file size. This makes them the prefered way to display photos online while
keeping lower page load times.
 JPG Don't use for...
 Editing photographs
 Print
 Why? JPGs lose quality in compression. This is even more evident when edited,
resized, and saved.

 Portable Network Graphic (PNG)

 PNG Use for...
 Transparency
 A smakk rage that maintains its original quality
 Why? PNGs maintain their original quality when compressed. When you need to
make a PNG smaller, it will look as sharp as the original file.
 PNG Don't use for..
 Sharing high resolution photographs on the web
 Why? PNGs are larger file sizes than JPGs and GIFs. The larger the file size, the
longer it is to load on the web.

Principles and Basic of Image Manipulation

 Resizing/Compressing
 Cropping/Adjusting
 Text over Image

WEEK 4 : Online Platforms

GLIMPSE OF HISTORY
 The First Website
 The first website was created by Tim Berners-Lee, who was then a computer scientist at
European Organization For Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva

1. DEFINITIONS
Platform- a system that can be programmed and customized by outside developers (users),
adapted to countless needs and niches
GENERAL PROGRAM - created by original developer
If the user/outside developer can customize the system of a webpage then that site is a
platform.
2. LEVELS OF PLATFORM
 Access API
 Plugin API
 Runtime Environment
API- Application Programming Interface
Software intermediary - messenger linking user to server
Component 1- User
Component 2- App/Website
Component 3- Data
Component 4- System
E.g.
User- customer
API- waiter
System- Kitchen

ACCESS API
 Developer's application code lives outside the platform
 Building and running is left entirely to the developer (programming language, database,
servers, storage, networking, security, etc)

PLUGIN API
 Developers build new functions that can be plugged in to the core system (platform itself)
and user interface
RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT
 Third party application codes run inside the platform (developer code is uploaded and
runs online inside the platform itself)

3. WEB DESIGN
 Concept of planning, creating and maintaining websites
 process of creatively designing and constructing a website and updating it regularly to
incorporate changes
Visual Hierarchy
 elements should be ranked according to importance and objectives
Proportion
 use of golden ratio (dividing width by 1.618)
Hick's Law
 reduce number of choices for better user experience
Fitts' Law
 the larger the object/target and the shorter the distance, the easier it would be to move it
or reach it
Accessibility
 user must be able to access each bit of info in the easiest manner

Visible Language
 design must be clear, consistent, economical
Whitespace/ Simple Design
 makes processing of information simpler
Regular Testing
 Test Early, Test Often (TETO

4. WEB DESIGN ELEMENT

 Call to Action
 means to gain clientele/regular visitors
 Contact Us Page
 About Us Page
 Search option
 Footer

5. USING TEMPLATE
 ready-made design for your website, including images, some navigation, sample pages
Advantages of Web Templates
 You know how your finished site looks.
 Look much better than traditional HTML
 Faster turnaround
 Much cheaper
 Can be customized by anyone
6. CLOUD COMPUTING AND MAPPING
 CLOUD COMPUTING - delivery of services over the internet
 DROPBOX IBM Cloud Google Cloud Google Drives iCloud
 MIND MAPPING - graphical ways of representing ideas and concepts
(frameworks/ diagrams)
