Digital Native is any individual born or brought up in the age of digital technology
and therefore familiar with computers and the internet from an early age.

What is It

World Wide Web

It was also known as WWW or W3, introduced by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. It consists
of different pages formatted in a markup language called HTML (Hypertext Markup
Language) and linked to each other containing text, graphics, multimedia files,
hyperlinks, etc. It can either be static or dynamic.

Web 1.0
• Webpages were static and were called read-only web.
• It is also known as a flat or stationary page, and users cannot manipulate it.
• The only accessible feedback mechanism was through private emails.

Web 2.0
• The term used to describe the present generation of the World Wide Web
concentrates on its capability to provide people the means to collaborate and
share information online.
• Dynamic Website - The content of the website changes
• Interactive - The user may be able to comment or create a user account

Features of Web 2.0

1. Folksonomy. It enables users to categorize and classify/arrange information
using freely selected keywords (e.g., tagging). Popular social networking sites
such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc., use tags that start with the pound
sign (#). It is also referred to as a hashtag.
2. Rich User Experience. Content is dynamic and is responsive to the users'
input. An example would be a website that shows local content. In the case of
social networking sites, when logged on, your account is used to modify what
you see on their website.
3. Long Tail. Services are offered on-demand rather than on a one-time
purchase. In some instances, time-based pricing is better than file-size-based
pricing or vice versa.
4. User Participation. The owner of the website is not the only one who can put
content. Others can place the content of their own through comments,
reviews, and evaluation.
5. Software as a Service. Users will subscribe to a software-only when needed
rather than purchasing them. There is a cheaper option if you do not always
need to use the software.
6. Mass Participation. It is diverse information sharing through universal web
access. Since most users can use the Internet, Web 2.0 content is based on
people from various cultures.

Web 3.0
• It is described by Tim Berners-Lee (Father of the WWW) as the read-write-
execute web.
• It has been referred to as the semantic web – The ability of web technologies
to understand and interpret human-generated content
• Web 3.0 aims to have machines that understand the users' preferences to be
able to deliver web content explicitly targeting the user.

Search and Research Skills

What’s In
From the previous lesson, we have learned that there are three versions of Web
Technologies: Web 1.0, Web 2.0, and Web 3.0. These ICT trends in today's generation
focus on technological convergence, social media, mobile technologies, and assistive
media. This lesson will discuss and give importance to online safety, security, ethics,
and etiquette. We will also discuss different online techniques to help us be more
knowledgeable when we visit and get information from other websites.

What’s New

Activity 2: Self-Check on Online Habits

Directions: Reflect and assess yourself on your online habits. Check “Yes” or “No”
on the table below.

Online habits Yes No

I always talk to strangers on social media.
You are giving your password to your friends.
You are posting about the future of your vacations.
I am visiting unsecured websites.
I am ranting on social media.
You are downloading any applications that you like.

What is It

The internet is defined as the information superhighway. This means that anyone
can access this highway, place information, and grab that information. This is why
social networking sites like Facebook continue to improve their security features. The
threat of cybercrime is genuine. Whatever information we share today could affect
our future.

Tips to Stay Safe Online

The internet is a public place, and it is up to you to protect yourself. Here are some
tips to help you stay safe when using the internet.
1. Be mindful of what you share online and what site you share it with.
2. Do not just accept terms and conditions; read it.

(DO_Q3_EMPOWERMENT_TECHNOLOGIES_
7
GRADE11_LESSON2)
3. Know the security features of the social networking site you use. By keeping
your profile private, search engines will not be able to scan your profile.
4. Avoid logging in to public networks/Wi-Fi. Browsing in. Incognito (or private)
mode will NOT protect you from hackers.
5. Install and update antivirus software on your computer.
6. If you have Wi-Fi at home, make it a private network by adding a password.
7. Avoid downloading anything from untrusted websites.
8. Buy the software, do not use pirated ones.
9. Do not reply or click links from suspicious emails.
10. Make Online Purchases from Secure Sites.

Internet Threats
Here are some of the threats you should be aware of when using the Internet:
1. Malware– or malicious software. Any program or file is harmful to a computer
user.
Types of Malware:
a. Virus - A malicious program designed to replicate itself and transfer from one
computer to another.
b. Worm - It is a dangerous computer program that replicates itself through a
network.
c. Trojan - A malicious program disguises as a useful program but, once downloaded
or installed, leaves your PC unprotected and allows hackers to get your
information.
d. Spyware - A program that runs in the background without you knowing it (thus
called “spy”). It can monitor what you are currently doing and typing
through keylogging.
Keylogger – used to record keystrokes done by the user. This is done to steal
their password or any other sensitive information. The keylogger software
typically uses a log file to store its recording.
e. Adware - A program designed to send you advertisements, mostly as pop-ups.
f. Ransomware - or ransom software is a type of malicious software from crypto
virology that threatens to publish the victim's data or perpetually block
access to it unless a ransom is paid.

2. Spam - Usually unsolicited commercial email sent from an unknown source with
an identical message sent to multiple recipients.

3. Phishing - It is a deceitful practice of trying to get confidential information such

as passwords and usernames, and credit card details by making it appear as if it
comes from a trustworthy source.

What’s More

Internet Research is a research method in collecting and gathering information via

internet by using a search engine.

Search Engine is a program that allows users to search for content on the internet.

want your parents or family relatives to see it? Would you like your future boss to
see it?
2. If you feel that a post can distress your or others’ reputation, ask the one who
posted it to pull it down or report it as inappropriate.

Copyright
Copyright is a protection given to the owner of the rights in an original work such as
books, musical works, films, paintings, other works, and computer programs. This
original work is called intellectual property which is protected under Republic Act
8293, known as the “Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.”

Copyright Infringement
It happens when another person uses the copyrighted work without the permission
of the author or copyright holder. Any person who is infringing the right to protected
work would be liable under the law.

Fair Use
Fair use uses copyrighted material for comment, teaching, criticism, news reporting,
research, scholarship, and other similar purposes, with no copyright infringement.

Lesson Imaging and Design for the

4 Online Environment

What’s In

We learned the three most commonly used Microsoft Office Suite applications,
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint, from the previous lesson.
In this lesson, we will discover that graphic design plays a significant role in the
world today. This module is all about imaging and design for the online environment,
from basic graphics and layout principles to infographics.

What’s New

Basic Principles of Graphics and Layout

The elements and principles of design are the building blocks of a successful,
beautiful design. The design elements are the things or tools that make up a design,
while the Principles of design are what we do to those elements.

Layout:
It is the process of planning and arranging graphics or text on a page or book.
A good layout should have a balanced makeup and alignment of elements.

The Elements of Design

These are the materials or tools to make different designs or Arts.
1. Line– Lines are defined by points moving in space. It can create a sense of
movement or direction in your design. The line can be smooth, rough, straight,
curved, broken, thick, or thin.

2. Shape – A shape is an enclosed space, the boundaries of which are defined by

other elements of art like lines, colors, values, or textures. Shapes can be used to
create patterns and draw the viewers' attention.

3. Direction – Applying motion to create the visual illusion of movement. Use

horizontal direction for calmness, stability, and tranquility while vertical direction for
emotions of balance, formality, and alertness.
4. Size (Scale) – Size is the relationship of the area occupied by one shape to another.
Large elements are more significant than small ones.

(DO_Q3_EMPOWERMENT_TECHNOLOGIES_

GRADE11_LESSON4)
5. Texture – Texture refers to an object's surface appearance given by the
dimensions, form, thickness, arrangement, and amount of its essential parts.

6. Color– Color is light redirected off objects. It is used to create curiosity and
emotions in the viewers. It has three main characteristics: hue (these are red, green,
blue, etc.), value (lightness/ darkness), and intensity (saturation, or amount of
pigment), and temperature (warm and cold).

What is It

The Principles of Design

These are the rules that help you organize and place the materials to make arts
or designs.
1. Balance - The visual weight of objects, texture, colors, and space is evenly
distributed on the screen.
Symmetrical - There should be equal weights or elements on both sides of
the page.
Asymmetrical - It may be asymmetrical when there is an artistic and different
intensity on one side of the page.
Radical - occurs when the design elements swirl out from a central axis.

2. Emphasis - An area in the design that may appear different in size, texture, shape,
or color to attract the viewers' attention.

3. Movement - It describes the flow of elements on the page. Visual elements guide
the viewers' eyes around the screen.

4. Pattern, Repetition, and Rhythm - These are the repeating visual element on an
image or layout to create unity in the layout or image. Rhythm is achieved when
visual elements make sense of organized movement.

5. Proportion - Visual elements create a

sense of unity where they relate well with
one another.

6. Variety - This uses several design

elements to draw a viewer's
attention.

Infographics
Information graphics or infographics
represent information, statistical data, or
knowledge graphically, usually done in a
creative way to attract the viewers'
attention.

Image File Formats

Image file format refers to how data
associated with the image will be stored. It
can be compressed to decrease the file size
of the picture.
1. .JPG - Used for Real-life photographs,
high compression, Online photos, and
artwork.
(DO_Q3_EMPOWERMENT_TECHNOLOGIES_

2. .GIF - Computer-generated graphics that is best used for diagrams, cartoons, and
logos, which use a few colors and animated
effects. https://www.doh.gov.ph/node/24559
3. .PNG - This file format is best with line art,
text, and logo and is considered best as the image file type for web graphics.

Types of Compression
1. Lossy compression reduces file size by removing redundant information,
which means that some data from the image file is lost.
2. Lossless compression retains values and manages to lower file size.

___________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________

What’s In

Web design refers to the design of websites that are displayed on the internet. It
usually refers to the user experience aspects of website development rather than
software development. In 1989, whilst working at CERN Tim Berners-Lee proposed
to create a global hypertext project, which later became known as the World Wide
Web. From 1991 to 1993 the World Wide Web was born. Text-only pages could be
viewed using a simple line-mode browser.[2] In 1993 Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina
created the Mosaic browser. At the time there were multiple browsers, however, the
majority of them were Unix-based and naturally text-heavy.

(DO_Q3_EMPOWERMENT_TECHNOLOGIES_

What’s New

Web design
Web design encompasses many different skills and disciplines in the production
and maintenance of websites. The different areas of web design include web graphic
design; user interface design (UI design); authoring, including standardized code
and proprietary software; user experience design (UX design); and search engine
optimization. Often many individuals will work in teams covering different aspects of
the design process, although some designers will cover them all.

What is It

Web design is the process of creating websites. It encompasses several different

aspects, including webpage layout, content production, and graphic design. While
the terms web design and web development are often used interchangeably, web
design is technically a subset of the broader category of web development.

8 Principles of Good Website Design

Good website design needs a wide range of professionals having expertise in different
areas.
Here is the list of 8-good design principles that will make your website aesthetic,
user-friendly, effective, and engaging:

1. Simple Is the Best

The over-designed website may not work. Putting too many elements on the page
may lead to distracting visitors from the main purpose of your website. Simplicity
always works in an effective web page design.

2. Consistency

Consistency in website design matter a lot. Give your attention to match design
elements throughout each of the pages. It can be understood that your fonts, sizes,
headings, sub-headings, and button styles must be the same throughout the
website. Plan everything.

(DO_Q3_EMPOWERMENT_TECHNOLOGIES_
27
GRADE11_LESSON6)
3. Typography & Readability

No matter how good your design is text still rules the website as it provides users the
desired information. Since search engine crawlers are very much familiar with this
data, it becomes an integral part of SEO activities.

4. Mobile Compatibility

Keeping in mind the ever-growing usage of smartphones, tablets, and phablets, web
design must be effective for various screens. If your website design doesn’t support
all screen sizes, the chance is that you’ll lose the battle with your competitors.

5. Color Palette and Imagery

A perfect color combination attracts users while a poor combination can lead to
distraction. This necessitates you to pick a perfect color palette for your website
which can create a pleasing atmosphere, thus leaving a good impact on visitors.

6. Easy Loading

No one likes a website that takes too much time to load. So take care of it by
optimizing image sizes, combing code into a central CSS or JavaScript file as it
reduces HTTP requests.

7. Easy Navigation
Study shows that visitors stay more time on websites having easy navigation. For
effective navigation, you may consider creating a logical page hierarchy, using bread
scrums, and designing clickable buttons.

(DO_Q3_EMPOWERMENT_TECHNOLOGIES_
28
GRADE11_LESSON6)
8. Communication

The ultimate purpose of the visitors is to get information, and if your website can
communicate with your visitors efficiently, most probably they would spend more
time on your website.

What is the difference between portal and website?

ONLINE PORTAL WEBSITE

30 (DO_Q3_EMPOWERMENT_TECHNOLOGIES_
GRADE11_LESSON7)
What’s In

Online Portal - An Online Portal refers to a webpage (or website) that provides users
an entryway to a variety of information, tools, links, and more. Originally, these
portals were referred to as links pages; however, now these portals serve a variety of
different purposes.

Typically, online portals are designed to offer users an assortment of the most used
types of information and services. In doing this, online portals have become open to
personalization and customization—thusly leading to different types of portals. For
example, government portals that provide important civic information, private
enterprise portals for businesses, and customer portals for customers to access
features of the web service they subscribe to.

What’s New

What Is an Online Portal?

A portal is a door or an entryway. The term online refers to the Internet and the web
pages that form part of the World Wide Web. An online portal, or web portal, is a
website that provides an entry point for a range of information, tools, and links.

What is a Website?
A website (also written as a website) is a collection of web pages and related content
that is identified by a common domain name and published on at least one web
server. Notable examples are wikipedia.org, google.com, and amazon.com.
All publicly accessible websites collectively constitute the World Wide Web. There are
also private websites that can only be accessed on a private network, such as a
company's internal website for its employees.

What is It

8 Different Types of Websites

As a designer or small business owner, you need to be familiar with all the different
kinds of web pages out there, so you can decide which will meet your needs. Studying
what competitors chose and conducting testing allow you to create the perfect format
for each brand and their customer base.

(DO_Q3_EMPOWERMENT_TECHNOLOGIES_
31
GRADE11_LESSON7)
Here are the 8 Different Types of Websites:
1. Homepages
The homepage is your site’s main hub and serves as the face of a brand. Your
homepage helps site visitors get to different areas of the site, and it can also serve as
a conversion funnel. Because most people come to you through your homepage, this
is where design matters most.

2. Magazine websites
A magazine website features articles, photos, and videos that are informational and
educational. In the last twenty years, the magazine industry has changed from a
print-only platform to a largely digital format. The magazine website type works well
for informational websites, particularly publications from universities and
organizations.

3. E-commerce websites
An e-commerce website is an online shopping destination where users can purchase
products or services from your company. A robust e-commerce web page makes it
easy to browse products, filter by categories, highlight special sales, and make
purchases.

4. Blogs
A blog features regularly updated articles, photos, and videos. Blogs started with
more casual, personal content compared to magazines. But since then, the lines have
blurred, and now it’s extremely common for major brands and businesses to have
their blog. Adding expert content improves the overall credibility of a company or an
individual. Blogs also provide material for social media posts and email campaigns.

5. Portfolio websites
A portfolio website allows creative professionals a place for showcasing their best
work. This is perfect for artists, writers, designers, filmmakers, furniture builders—
you name it.

6. Landing Pages
A landing page is a specific page type created for a marketing campaign that drives
visitors to take a specific action. The content on a landing page should be limited
and point toward the call-to-action (CTA) you’d like the user to take. Allow plenty of
white space around your CTA and save elements not related to the purpose of that
campaign for other pages.

7. Social media websites

There are approximately 2.77 billion people on social media with dozens of different
platforms available. No matter who your target audience is, you’ll probably find them
on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram or Snapchat, or LinkedIn. Although you can’t
redesign the platforms themselves, you do have some control over the look of your
page, and you can create content that drives social media shares.

(DO_Q3_EMPOWERMENT_TECHNOLOGIES_
32
GRADE11_LESSON7)
8. Directory and contact pages
A directory or contact page is a place where users can connect with you or others.
This type of website works well when you want to list a repository of businesses or
people within an organization. For example, a local restaurant directory features an
eatery in the area with menus, price ranges, phone numbers, and reviews.

Blog
A blog (a truncation of "weblog") is a discussion or informational website published
on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete, often informal diary-style text entries
(posts). Posts are typically displayed in reverse chronological order, so that the most
recent post appears first, at the top of the web page. Until 2009, blogs were usually
the work of a single individual, occasionally of a small group, and often covered a
single subject or topic. In the 2010s, "multi-author blogs" (MABs) emerged, featuring
the writing of multiple authors and sometimes professionally edited. MABs
from newspapers, other media outlets, universities, think tanks, advocacy groups,
and similar institutions account for an increasing quantity of blog traffic. The rise
of Twitter and other "microblogging" systems helps integrate MABs and single-author
blogs into the news media. A Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain
or add content to a blog.
Newsletter
A newsletter is a printed or electronic report containing news concerning the
activities of a business or an organization that is sent to its members, customers,
employees, or other subscribers. Newsletters generally contain one main topic of
interest to their recipients. A newsletter may be considered grey literature. E-
newsletters are delivered electronically via e-mail and can be viewed
