a What is It This section provides a brief discussion of the
lesson. This aims to help you discover and understand new
concepts and skills.

In this part of your journey, we provided something for you to deepen your
understanding about the topic.

Please read with comprehension to discover knowledge that will help you out in
dealing with the next phase of your quest.

ELEMENTS OF TREND

Fads play an important role in determining something in becoming a “trend”.

Consumer’s positive reaction on new products, behaviors, events, and fashion will
lead to something more, consistency is the key to make fads turn to trend.

There are three fundamental and essential elements that drives all trend. They are
the contributing factors in making a trend last longer.

1. Basic Needs - The Biological, Physiological needs

are the primary driving forces that have been shaping
our behavior everyday. Our need to have a food,
water, air, clothes and sleep are the primary things
that must be address for the survival of ones’

3
individual. Next is the safety needs, a need for shelter and freedom from harm and
danger. Education, Information, Communication and Technology are also included
as basic needs of human as we are now in the 21st century. These needs are
necessary for the survival of humankind.

1. Drivers of Change - These are the forces of change that make trends what they
are. A driver is the cause of one or more effects that leads to change. Remember
there are no trends without change. Trends are rooted in our basic human
needs, wants and desires; and these desires are asking for something more and
new.

Our Society, People and Culture are changing therefore our basic needs are also
changing from simple way of living into more easiest and convenient type of living,
people needs to upgrade everything, we need to adopt and embrace those changes
that is happening in our society. No need for Post mail and Telegrams as Messaging
Apps are now free to access. Instant foods are all over the place. Busy at work and
do not have time to do some grocery shopping just click Lazada, Growsari or
Shopee on the next day you got what you need. Change drivers behind trends are
the following Enabler, Friction and Blockers.

Categories of driving forces and blockers

Technology is the most powerful force for change in the world today that
provides new capabilities that makes change possible in
products and services, solutions, and business models.
Powerful There are celebrated and charismatic figures in history like
individuals and Jesus of Nazareth and Nelson Mandela who significantly
powerful change the future. They radically changed the course of
organization history and in our society through their teachings and
principles.
Ideas and Our ideas and ideologies compel and drive us to actions in the
ideologies future whether these are in the social, political, economic,
and/or technological arena.
Social and moral They are related to ideas, but have a slightly different function
values because values generally very slowly, if at all, so they mostly
apply brakes in the future. Social values are the last line of
defense against a rush of technology capabilities that may or
may not lead us to questionable places.

2. Innovation - According to Oxford English Dictionary, Innovation means

introducing of something new, a product, service of process into the market place.
The National Innovation Initiative (NII) of USA defines innovation as the
intersection of invention and insights, leading to the creation of social and
economic value. The NII began in 2003 as a multi-year effort engaging hundreds of
leaders across the country and from all walks of life to optimize our entire society
for a future in which innovation will be the single most important factor in shaping
prosperity,

How these 3 elements react with each other? Trends emerge as innovators address
people’s basic human needs and wants in novel ways. We look for customer facing
innovation that are redefining what people will want and even start to expect. In
order to meet the needs of consumers, Companies
and Entrepreneurs must improve and develop new
products and services. Target their innovations at
the sweet spot of customer expectation!. Where is
the sweet spot? Identifying the consumers basic
need and by understanding where it came from,
what is the driving force of a sudden need of change
by considering the gaps, knowing the existing services and products and analyzing
what is needed to be done based on the 3 elements of trend then Innovations will
take place. Tracking trends helps to meet and surpass consumer’s rapidly
changing expectations. The big question is “What will the customers want
next?”.These developments are cause by change, and therefore affecting or shaping
the future. Keeping an eye on the competition, new vision, new business concepts,
new products, services, experiences, marketing, advertising and PR.
