TUTORIAL 1:CHEMISTRY

Reaction between NO2 gas with H2O will produced nitric acid HNO3 and
NO.
I. Write the balance equation for the reaction.
3NO2+H2O→2HNO3+NO
II. Write the mole ratios and mass ratios
3 NO2:1 H2O:2 HNO3:1 NO
III. Calculate the mole of nitric acid produced from 0.381 mole of NO2
Mass ratio:
3×46 NO2:1×18 H20:2×63 HNO3:1×30 NO

3 NO2:2 HNO3
0.381 NO2:X HNO3

X=0.381×2/3
=0.254 mol
IV. Calculate the mass of nitric acid produced from this process
n=mass/molar mass
=0.254×63
Mass HNO3=16 g

6.35 g of Zn react with 8.0 g of sulphur will produced zinc sulphide.

Calculate mass of ZnS produced.
a) Write the balance equation
Zn+S→ZnS
b) Write the moles ratios
1:1:1
c) Calculate the moles of reactant(Given AW,Zn=65.3 gmol-1,S=32 gmol-1)
nZn=6.53g/65.3gmol-1=0.1 mol ns=8g/32gmol-1=0.25 mol
d) Show the limiting reactant
=0.1 mol(smaller)thus, limiting reactant
e) Calculate mass of ZnS produced
0.1=mass ZnS/molar mass
0.1(97.3)=m
mZnS=9.73g

705 mg of K3PO4 is added to 15.0 mL of 0.05 M AgNO3 to produce

Ag3PO4 precipitate and KNO3.

i. Write the balanced equation for the above reaction

K3PO4+3AgNO3→ Ag3PO4+3KNO3.
ii. Identify the limiting reactant in this reaction.
(K=39.10 g/mol-1,P=30.97 g/mol-1,O=16.00 g/mol-1,Ag=107.9
g/mol-1,N=14.0 g/mol-1
70.5 mg=0.0705 g
n K3PO4=0.0705/212.27
=0.0003 mol
n AgNO3=MV/1000
=0.05(15ML)/1000
=0.00075 mol

1 K3PO4:3AgNO3: 1 Ag3PO4

3AgNO3: 1 Ag3PO4

0.00075:X

X=0.00075/3

=0.00025 mol smaller than 0.00075 mol thus limiting reactant

iii. Calculate the theoretical yield,in grams of the precipitate forms.

n=m/molar
0.00025=m/molar mass Ag3PO4
m=0.00025×418.58
=0.1 gram Ag3PO4
