Stoichiometry Calculation Practice Worksheet

1. Calculate the number of moles of NaOH that are needed to react with 500.0 g of
H2SO4 according to the following equation:

H2SO4 + 2 NaOH  Na2SO4 + 2 H2O

molar mass of H2SO4 = 2(1.008) + 32.06 + 4(16.00) = 98.08 g/mol
Number of moles of H2SO4 = mass / molar mass = 500.0 g / 98.08 g/mol = 5.098 mol
moles of NaOH = 2 x moles of H2SO4 = 2 x 5.098 mol = 10.19 mol

ANS: 10.19 mol

2. Calculate the mass of NH3 that can be produced from the reaction of 125 g of NCl3
according to the following equation:

NCl3 + 3 H2O  NH3 + 3 HOCl

Number of moles of NCl3 = mass / molar mass = 125 g / 120.46 g/mol = 1.038 mol
molar mass of NH3 = 14.01 + 3(1.008) = 17.03 g/mol
mass of NH3 produced= 1.038 mol x 17.03 g/mol = 17.7 g

ANS: 17.7 g
3. Identify the limiting reactant and determine the mass of CO2 that can be produced from the
reaction of 25.0 g of C3H8 with 75.0 g of O2 according to the following equation:

C3H8 + 5 O2  3 CO2 + 4 H2O

Number of moles= 2.344 mol O2 × (3 mol CO2 / 5 mol O2) = 1.406 mol CO2
Mass of CO2 = 1.406 mol × 44.01 g/mol = 61.9 g

ANS: 61.9 g
4. How many grams of SO2 are produced when 152 g of CS2 react with 48.0 g of O2
according to the following equation:

CS2 + 3 O2  CO2 + 2 SO2

Number of moles of CS2 = 152 g / 76.14 g/mol = 1.999 mol

Number of moles of O2 = 48.0 g / 32.00 g/mol = 1.500 mol
1.500 mol O2 × (2 mol SO2 / 3 mol O2) = 1.000 mol SO2
1.000 mol SO2 × 64.06 g/mol = 64.1 g

ANS: 64.1 g

5. When 50.0 g of MgCO3 react completely with H3PO4, as shown below,15.8 g of CO2
are produced. What is the percent yield for this reaction?

2 H3PO4 + 3 MgCO3  Mg3(PO4)2 + 3 CO2 + 3 H2O

% Yield = 15.8 g / 26.1 g x 100 = 60.5%

ANS: 60.5%
6. How many grams of P4O10 can be produced from the reaction of 52.9 g of
KClO3 with excess phosphorous as shown below:

KClO3 (s) + P4 (s)  P4O10 (s) + KCl (s) (unbalanced)

the number of moles of KClO3: (52.9 g) / (122.55 g/mol) = 0.432 mol.

the number of moles of P4O10 produced: 0.432 mol KClO3 × (3 mol

P4O10 / 10 mol KClO3) = 0.1296 mol P4O10

mass of P4O10: 0.1296 mol P4O10 × (283.89 g/mol) = 36.8 g P4O10

approximately 36.8 grams of P4O10 can be produced from the reaction

ANS: 36.8 g
7. Given the equation below, determine the limiting reactant, and calculate how many
grams of Cu can be formed from the reaction of 18.1 g of NH3 and 90.4 g of CuO.

2 NH3 (g) + 3 CuO (s)  N2 (g) + 3 Cu (s) + 3 H2O (g)

The molar mass of NH3: 14.01 + 3(1.01) = 17.03 g/mol
The molar mass of CuO: 63.55 + 16.00 = 79.55 g/mol

grams of Cu can be formed from the reaction of 18.1 g of NH3 and 90.4 g of CuO: (18.1 g NH3) * (1 mol NH3 /
17.03 g NH3) = 1.063 mol NH3 (90.4 g CuO) * (1 mol CuO / 79.55 g CuO) = 1.137 mol CuO

If all the NH3 reacts, it would consume: (1.063 mol NH3) * (3 mol CuO / 2 mol NH3) = 1.594 mol CuO. Not all
the NH3 will react so CuO is the limiting reactant.

The amount of Cu produced will be: (1.137 mol CuO) * (3 mol Cu / 3 mol CuO) = 1.137 mol Cu
ANS: 72.2 g
Converting this to grams using the molar mass of Cu (63.55 g/mol): (1.137 mol Cu) * (63.55 g Cu / 1 mol Cu) =
2
approximately 72.2 g of Cu can be formed from the reaction.

8. When 50.0 g of MgCO3 react completely with H3PO4, as shown below,15.8 g of CO2 is produced.
Determine the theoretical and percent yield for this reaction?

2 H3PO4 + 3 MgCO3  Mg3(PO4)2 + 3 CO2 + 3 H2O

50.0 g MgCO3 x 1 mol/84.31g x 3 mol CO2/3 mol MgCO3 x 44.01 g/1 mol= 26.1 g CO2
% Yield = 15.8 g / 26.1 g x 100 = 60.5%

ANS: 26.1 g; 60.5%

9. What mass of F2 is needed to produce 120.0 g of PF3, as shown, if the reaction has
a 78.1% yield?
P4 (s) + 6 F2 (g)  4 PF3

Converting the mass of PF3 to moles using its molar mass:

The molar mass of PF3 is 30.97 + 3(19.00) = 87.97 g/mol
120.0 g PF3) * (1 mol PF3 / 87.97 g PF3) = 1.364 mol PF3

78.1% of the theoretical yield: (1.364 mol PF3) / (0.781) = 1.746 mol PF3 (theoretical yield)

It takes 6 moles of F2 to produce 4 moles of PF3. Amount of F2 needed to produce 1.746 mol of
PF3: (1.746 mol PF3) * (6 mol F2 / 4 mol PF3) = 2.619 mol F2

Converting to grams using the molar mass of F2F2 (38.00 g/mol): (2.619 mol F2) * (38.00 g F2 / 1
mol F2) = approximately 99.6 g of F2 is needed to produce 120.0 g of PF3 with a 78.1% yield.

ANS: 99.6 g
