Mental Health Project – Plan

EVAN, CATHAL, SHEA AND MEGAN

Fictional Scene featuring a person struggling with mental illness WITH V/O
Show a fictional scene of the person from the beginning finding a flyer for a
local mental health counselling service and them going to the place WITH AMBIENT
SOUND.

TO BE SHOT THIS WEEK (HOPEFULLY) BY CATHAL ADHERING TO GUIDELINES

(could be of the person just walking along the bridge or the quay, looking sad)

Interviews with representatives from local mental health charities and


counselling groups, people we will make contact with include AWARE NI, Zest,
HURT – Have Your Tomorrows and NWRC’s Counselling Service
EVAN WILL APPROACH ALL GROUPS AND IN CONSIDERATION OF NEW COVID RESTRICTIONS WILL ADAPT
TRADITIONAL INTERVIEWS TO A COMBINATION OF FORMATS, Phone Interviews, Zoom Interviews, Pre-
recorded Interviews, Written transcripts and Socially Distanced Interviews. It is hoped that the majority of
possible interviews will be completed for class next week.

Possibly speak to someone who has lost someone due to mental illness
 Evan will ask each charity individually if they can identify someone who is willing to talk about loss
and the impact of suicide, suicide prevention and life for those left behind.
 Possibly speak to someone who had thoughts of or tried to commit
suicide that would be willing to tell people how it gets better eventually.
 Evan will also ask each group individually if they can identify someone who is willing to talk about
suicidal thoughts and surviving suicide.

Cover the Suicide Problem in Derry (e.g, the strong suicide rate, the different
problems people face which affects their mental health, etc)
Include statistics about Mental Health and Suicide relating to both Derry and
the UK
Shea will undertake research to determine the extent of the problem in Derry and will include a summary and
stats to back up his findings. Shea will present an update next week.
Talk about the effect that Covid 19 and Lockdown has had on the
Suicide/Mental Health issue in Derry
End on a positive note (cuts from interviews or voiceover of people saying how
it gets better etc and the fictional scene of the person getting help for their
problems)
This will be a scripted piece written by Megan, who will also perform the and voiceover. Megan will present an
update in class next week.

Possibly Speak to some young people/students on their views on mental


health in Derry
Evan, Cathal, Shea and Megan will identify and talk to a student individually from their class and record their
response to the impact of Covid and Lockdown on themselves, their family and friends.

Drone shots of Derry with voice over (powerful and interesting imagery draws
attention)
EVAN WILL TAKE SPECIFIC DRONE FOOTAGE OF THE CITY, THE FOYLE BRIDGE, THE PEACE BRIDGE, CRAIGAVON
BRIDGE, LOUGH FOYLE AND THE CITY IN GENERAL.

Show some phone numbers for local services during the credits
THIS WILL BE DONE IN THE EDIT BY CATHAL AND SHEA ON LINE (ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE)
