Generation NeXt, Generation Y, the Net Generation, Echo Boomers, DotNets, Generation Me or more
popularly known as Millenials are the most diverse cohort in history (J.R. Studer & B. O’Bannon, 2012). With the
diversity of this generation, it is usually present in a common situation wherein our counselors take responsibility in
learning about this type of generation and how to counter if a problem involving these millenials that needs
counseling should arise.
Counselors play a huge role in dealing with problems, be it educational or not, that involves millenials.
Millenials are often characterized as having a sense of entitlement, having more chronic diseases, symptoms of
major depressive disorder, and symptoms associated with psychopathology compared to previous generations. They
are more sensitive and can be more emotionally unstable. Though our counselors already have huge responsibilities
and accountabilities even before the existence of these millenials, dealing with this generation would not be
considered a walk in the park.
Our educational counselors need to do more research and pedagogical approaches for the counseling to be
effective and have an upright result in the future. To further achieve this, there has to be a conduct on follow-up
counseling, evaluation of the counselor’s activities, and primary prevention to promote individual mental health.
