The Impact of Cultural and
Global Issues on Communication
The are two significant events happened in the
Philippines wherein communication were
evidently affected by the societal and political
issues:
a) The Martial Law Declaration
b) The EDSA People Power Revolution
FM pulled off martial law
What happened to the nation?
• Sept. 23, 1972-Ferdinand
Marcos declared PD 1081 on
national television which
placed the entire Philippines
under martial law.
• Arrests were made that day
before, and most of the country
did not have any idea how the
coming days would change the
fate of an entire nation.
• Country has been stifled by
controlling media outlets,
imposing curfew hour, and
shutting down Congress
• A society that was used to a culture of
democracy and free speech was silenced by
the proclamation of one man who wanted to
hold on to power for as long as he could.

Note that this only for educational

purposes and not against the past
governance.
EDSA People Power Revolution

• Feb. 25, 1986 – F. Marcos fled the

country as a result of EDSA People
Power Revolution
• Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal
Sin had played a key role in calling
on people over Radio Veritas to go
to EDSA
• Radio Veritas was captured by gov’t
troops but continued broadcasting
vital information over Radyo
Bandido at a secret location
EDSA People Power Revolution
• Traditional media as broadcast (TV and radio)
and print (newspaper and magazines) have
long played crucial role in reporting current
events and sharing significant information.
• Radio broadcasts were crucial during the
EDSA people power as it compelled Filipinos
from all walks of life to gather and form
barricades against tank.
EDSA People Power Revolution
• Despite of uncertainty and fear, people passed
information that was heard from live radio
transmissions to stand firm and hold vigil
together on this now-historical highway.

EDSA People Power Revolution
• Traditional media has also contributed much to shaping
public opinion. Entertaining audiences with
imagination and creativity, and inspiring certain
attitudes and consequent behaviors.
• Few months later, a popular song entitled “Handog ng
Pilipino sa Mundo” was performed by well-known
Filipino singers on TV and radio. It captured the
triumphant feeling of a people toppling a dictatorship
without bloodshed in music

EDSA People Power Revolution
• Similar peaceful revolutions followed by in
Poland, Germany and Czechoslovakia.
• German President Christian Wuff said at the
25th commemoration of the EDSA People
Power in 2011- “Only few months later, the
Berlin Wall came down and we Germans were
able to make our unified state a reality in
peace and freedom.”
The People’s Power Revolution
• Today, we see how various cultural and global
issues impact communication at a rate and
manner that has never been seen before. In
many respects the world has grown smaller
because of significant roles.

Globalization
• Globalization – popular term that describes
how and why the world continues to evolve in
the ways that it does.
– refers to the “processes through which local and
regional ideas, products, and practices are
transformed into worldwide ideas, products, and
practices (Griffin and Bone, 2014 as cited Suarez,
C., et.al.)
Survival to nature
Survival to nature is one of global issues that many
people share around.
Slogan
“think globally, act locally”
by environmental advocates (late 1980s)
-supporting local farms growing coffee beans
instead of imported coffee
-multinational companies study popular local
flavors in certain then bring the idea in local
market ( spaghetti in food chain in QC)
Advertisements in media
• Advertising in media does not only cater to
individual preferences and attitudes, it also
influences them. Industries have always paid
attention to consumers’ aspirations and
worries.
– Led too positive campaigns towards issues
(gender equality, respect for the elderly,
employment for the disabled and understanding
the refugee crisis)
– Led to perpetuation (Physical attributes of female
celebrity rather than her skills or virtues)
Stereotyping, discrimination and
ethnocentrism

• -media reports and features on current events

and issues have also heightened awareness for
everyday injustices brought on by
– Stereotyping
– Discrimination
– Ethnocentrism
