QUESTION NO. 1- Evolution of management programme in India-

From a small beginning in the east and west in 1961, when Government of India established IIM
Kolkata on November 14 and IIM Ahmedabad on December 111 and a stone was laid in south
too in the year 1962 by the great philanthropist and industrialist, Shri. Karumuttu Thiagarajan
Chettiar, Thiagarajar School of Management (TSM)2, since then management education in India
has come a long way. They all began with the aim to impart professional education to managers
who had a burning desire to scale up their career potential with better managerial skills. The pace
with which the management programme grew in India was moderate in the 60’s,70’s and 80’s.
Although in mid 80’s management programme showed a new thrust due to some triggers which
lead several PGDM granting institutions came up in the private sector and many universities
established departments of management studies, the triggers included the recessions of 1967,
1973 and 1981; the relatively new paradigm of the Janata government in 1977; the long-term
fiscal policy of VP Singh; the technology focus of Rajiv Gandhi; and, of course, the LPG
reforms beginning 1991. Gradually, most Indian companies found it necessary and rewarding to
learn and practice all the relevant functions of a modern corporation, including marketing,
quality, finance, HRM, R&D, IT, and planning. The proliferation of business schools in the
country along with several factors gave rise to another interesting phenomenon - specialisation
by domain and function. IIM Ahmedabad was perhaps the first institution to start a 2-year
program focused on the management of agriculture which was later followed by the Institute of

Rural Management (IRMA). Today almost all the management college provides the specialized
course in the form of PGDM3.

QUESTION NO. 2- Why did Indian Government start PGDM instead of MBA in IIM’s and
other premier Standalone Indian Bschool followed it?

After India became independent in 1947, the Planning Commission was entrusted to oversee and
direct the development of the nation. India grew rapidly in the 1950s, and in the late 1950s the
Commission started facing difficulties in finding suitable managers for the large number of
public sector enterprises that were being established in India as a part of its industrial policy. To
solve this problem the Indian government decided to set up two elite management institutes,
named Indian Institutes of Management. Calcutta and Ahmedabad were chosen as the locations
for the two new institutes4. To meet the industries demand industry focused curriculum was
needed and that was not achievable through MBA as MBA is a degree programme offered by the
universities through various colleges under it so the curriculum of the university applies to all the
colleges under it that’s why to meet the industry need autonomous college were established to
impart specialized courses through PGDM. PGDM stands for Post-Graduation Diploma in
Management is a PG diploma course offered by the autonomous institutions and approved by
AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), Ministry of HRD, and Govt of India. In
PGDM, the autonomous institute changes curriculum based on industrial requirements and
trends. Thus, PGDM courses have flexibility in the curriculum. Generally, PGDM focuses on
developing practical skills and real industry-oriented management case studies in budding
managers5. This is not possible through MBA as being a degree program of a university its
curriculum cannot change as and when required. But after the Union Cabinet, on 24 January

declares IIMs as Institutes of National Importance and enables them to grant degrees and
function independently.

5. Cost of the programme and its affordability.
6. Specializations offered by the college.
7. Student life and cultural activities.
8. Location of the college.

QUESTION NO. 4- After IIM Kolkata why IIM Ahmedabad was established and not IIM
Bombay?

Like MIT Sloan helped in the set up of IIM Calcutta, Harvard Business School played an
important role in the initial stages of IIM Ahmedabad. According to the book ‘The IIM-A
story—the DNA of an institution’ in 1955 central government established the TT
krishnamachhari committee to give recommendations on establishing a management institute and
Ford Foundation decided to help out.

In 1957 Harvard Business School committee led by Richard Merriam and Harold Thurbly was
invited by the Foundation and they recommended Calcutta and Bombay as the locations for the
first two institutions. The committee insisted that institutes would be autonomous.

But Bombay university wanted the institution to be the part of the university, but committee
insisted that institutions need to be autonomous otherwise they will lose their purpose of
providing industry specific management courses with regular curriculum updating.

Bombay university strong resistance for autonomous institution led the establishment of the
institution in Ahmedabad.7

offer PGDM and why?

Ahmedabad/articleshow/24789279.cms
Almost all the top 100 Bschools listed in NIRF ranking 2020 offers PGDM programme because
a PGDM focuses on the technical aspects, providing exposure to real-life business situations.
Also, another advantage of a PGDM is, as it is offered by autonomous institutes, the curriculum
can be upgraded more frequently to include the new changes and trends in business management.
Which helps the student to be industry ready and relevant.
