Choose an industry (such as banking, textile, pharmaceuticals, chemicals,

automobile and, etc.) Classify the firms operating in an industry into
prospector, defender, and analyzer categories. Provide solid reasons as to
why the firms are placed in these categories?

For the purpose of analyzing the management strategy of organizations under

Mile and Snow Typology, I have chosen three educational institutions in terms
of private education, with respect to higher secondary education. The institutes
are as follows:

Punjab Group of Colleges

UMT (ILM colleges)

University of South Asia

Punjab Group of Colleges (Prospector)

Punjab College of Commerce was founded in 1985 by the Punjab Group of

Colleges. Private colleges were not common at the time. People generally want
and have only one choice for higher secondary education, which is to attend
government colleges.

The Punjab College of Commerce was established by Mian Aamir Mehmood,

the founder of the Punjab Group of Colleges, as a prospector organization in the
field of higher secondary education. They initiated or developed a new pattern
in private colleges/education and provided students with opportunities in a
systemic manner. Students who got poor scores, decided to seek a career in
commerce, or couldn't get into a government college for any reason began to
consider PCC. By incorporating commerce education in a well-managed
manner, it has marked the beginning for becoming a business professional.

They now have a diverse service offering, are no longer reliant on secondary
education, and offering many disciplines other than commerce.

University of South Asia (Defender)

To provide computer science services, the Sadiq Memorial Educational

Society developed a network of National Colleges of Computer Science
throughout the country. NCCS was founded in 1987 as a computer training
association with the goal of promoting IT education. The first-degree program
was initiated in 1993. In 2003, it was renamed Institute of South Asia and
became a chartered degree-granting institution. In 2005, it was elevated to the
status of university.

University of South Asia (USA) is now one of Pakistan's most prestigious

private universities. It is in a strong place and seems to be content with its
present situation. They do not seem to have any intentions to add a new level of

education (higher secondary) as they seek to expand and make gradual progress
in under graduation and graduation programs. For the reason they retained a
steady market share and performed admirably in this setting, It seems that they
do not see the need for or have a plan for establishing their own colleges for
higher secondary education in order to enroll their own students in graduation
and post-graduate programs at their own universities.

UMT (ILM Colleges) (Analyzer)

UMT is a project of the ILM trust, which was established in 1990. The Institute
of Management and Technology (IMT) received its degree-granting charter in
2002, and IMT became UMT in 2004. UMT establishes ILM institutes/colleges,
which deliver undergraduate and graduate programs. We can see a prospector in
it as well, as they are the first organization to provide a teacher education degree
program in the private sector. They kept their current market shares and
afterwards identified market opportunity and demand before launching ILM
Colleges, a new higher secondary education initiative. In 2008, they began
providing higher secondary education under the name ILM Colleges. They may
have started somewhat late than the Punjab Group of Colleges, but they are still
flourishing in the industry.
