Businesses and How They Function

As the days go by, there is one thing that some may have noticed about the people of the

Rio Grande Valley. There is a major lack of non-profit organizations that are assisting with

animals and the prevention of animal cruelty. Some may feel as if with today’s younger

generation, there is more compassion and want to help out animals in need. Some have thought

long and hard on what they could do, as an individual, in order to help with animals and help

them go to a family that will properly take care of them. Unfortunately, most know that forming

a non-profit organization will not be an easy task, but some have always felt the need to help out

people and animals that are in need. Some understand that animals are not for everyone but way

too often people are just plain heartless when it comes to animals. Not everyone may have the

same beliefs but others may think some need to bring awareness for all animals. While some

people would love to save all animals, people must start small and then possibly work their way

up from there. In order for some to do this, they would love to; eventually; found a non-profit

organization.

Planning, organize, leading and controlling is also known as P-O-L-C. The P-O-L-C

helps managers respond to their problem by having it in place. Making sure that they have the

correct P-O-L-C framework also is something that is a must and is beneficial. This would help

them in the long run in order to have the best person in place to help run an organization. One

thing that people would have to make sure to do would not be to micromanage. The purpose of

the P-O-L-C would be to make sure they rage people instead of helping boost their morals.

When using the SMART acronym people’s goals have to be specific, measureable,

attainable, relevant and timely. When forming or wanting to form an organization it would be

best to use the SMART acronym for setting your goals. Having goal will get people to high

places, it is always best to plan. Making sure that they have some type of lean control would also

be beneficial to a non-profit. According to James Womack, lean control is the ‘process of

measuring and reducing inventory and streamlining production,” (Anonymous, 2012, p.1) Lean

control is something that they would need to have in order to make sure they do not have

anything that is wasteful within the organization. The elimination of waste can beneficial but

people have to note where they are lacking. Financials are always important to an organization,

but lean does not involve financial data. Decreasing waste can improve other aspects of a

company.

MUDA, which is a Japanese term for an activity that is wasteful and does not add value.

One item that some may think would be one of the most wasteful for the organization would be

transportation. The fact that they would have to have some type of transportation would be the

most wasteful items. Transportation is also known as one of the seven deadly wastes for an

organization. On the other hand, where would an organization be without some type of

transportation? If they want to be able and pick up animals to bring them back for care, then they

would have no choice but to invest in a vehicle.

There are many items that can affect the outcome of a successful organization. There has

to be some type or structure in order to have a balance within. Wanting to create an organization

that can help get stray animals off the street will, ideally, put their mind at ease. Some believe

that animals are capable of healing a person in need. Not only have animals been prove to boost

someone mood, they are also known for predicting emotional/medical changes in a person.

Organization structure can help an organization for the better. According to one of the readings it

states that; in order to achieve organizational goals and objectives, individual work needs to be

coordinated and managed. There are many goals that an organization must focus on, and without

these goals there can be no future goals. There are just a few different non-profit organizations

focus on saving animals here in the Rio Grande Valley, but there can be many more. Perhaps

there have been more in the past but they have closed. Having said that, it may make some

people wonder what they did wrong in order to not succeed. Was it because there was no order or

no control within the organization? Perhaps it was because the leader had not developed their

inner leadership skills. Knowing that the most recognized form of leadership is Authenticity, then

they must study and learn how to fine tune those skills. Being that there is a connection between

leadership and ethics, it can be said that a good leader can have a good foundation when it comes

to their ethics. Being that an authentic leader has high levels of self-awareness and their behavior

is driven by their core personal values.

With an organization, it can be hard to not have any change. With that being said, people

are not so interested in change. It can change the demographics of an organization, but change is

something that is hard to prevent. Technology is ever growing, and it can be hard to keep up with

all the changes. Thankfully, some can adapt to change, but people worry that when they get older

some may worry that they will fall behind and not are able to keep up with the fact that

technology is always changing. They can understand why people do not like change; the fear of

failure is my main reason.

When thinking about what some may want the managers to achieve, must take into

consideration using Mintzberg’s three areas for the ten roles (Anonymous, 2012, p.1). When

having an organization like some may want to establish, it would only make sense to have the 10

managerial roles. When you have all 10 of these items, you are able to then provide feedback,

process the information, and then put the information to use. If there was to ever be a problem

with your organization, you can gather all the feedback and then think of solutions. Properly

thought out and implemented controls gives an organization its standards (Anonymous, 2012, p.

1). Having a set structure within a company is always needed, but you never want to have it too

strict because then you can look as if they are wanting to be an authoritarian leader. They would

have to make sure that we would have to do departmentalization; this helps an organization

responsible for completing certain tasks. Another advantage of departmentalization is the

development of their skills. An organization can better those skills in various ways. Even though

departmentalization is good for an organization, it can also have its faults. With

departmentalization, it can come across as if there is a lack of leadership. Because there would be

no “leader,” that can lead to a lack of communication with all.

With wanting to start my non- profit organization some must have a plan of action. Once

my financials are in place, they would have to start with whom they would want to help lead and

what are their goals and vision. With anything, there will always be good and bad. According to

Bucata, he stated that, “In order to establish a climate of work performance, modern

organizations have begun to use new methods of management, with an emphasis on the

development of problem solving, communication, conflict, and motivation and employee

involvement in decision-making, while finding the solution of the problems within the group.”

(2018, p.275)

Once everyone understands what their roles will be, they can then begin to save animals.

For the first year, they would expect it to be slow. They would have to make sure that because no

one would know about our new non-profit it would be because we would be new and different

for the Rio Grande Valley.

they decided to use the Feedback loop in order to figure it out. The feedback loop will be

beneficial because it will give them a closer look on what they could be doing better.

In conclusion, controls affect everything in an organization. Without some type of

structure you have no goals and no track to stay on. While there is no such thing as a perfect

organization, they would love to get as close to it as possible
