Diet Guidelines for Colostomy

Milk and dairy


Include: Limit:
Non-fat (skim) or low-fat (1% or 2%) milk High fat milk and dairy products (whole milk,
Non-dairy milk (soy, almond) regular ice cream)
Powdered milk Milk and dairy products with lactose if you
Lactose-free dairy products have diarrhea after having them
Yogurt or lactose-free yogurt
Cheese or lactose-free cheese
Low-fat ice cream or sherbet
Eggs*

*start with a small amount, may cause a bad odor

Meats and protein

Include: Limit:
Lean animal proteins High-fat foods such as fried meat, poultry or
 Meat without visible fat fish
 Skinless poultry High-fiber foods such as dried or canned
 fish legumes (beans)
Nuts and nut butters*
Oral nutrition supplements**

Managing common problems

Diarrhea and constipation

Legumes (dried or cooked beans) Weak tea
