Community Service Report : Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia

1.1 Introduction
The research and associated case study are aimed to expose our society to more the non-
governmental organization that involved with community service in Malaysia. We already
identified a NGO which already help a lot of people especially the students. This research tells
more about the Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia and their contribution.

1.2 Background
YAYASAN FOOD BANK MALAYSIA (YFBM) established on 7 January 2019 as a Non-Profit
& Non-Government Organization (NGO) to take lead in managing and aligning the Food Bank
initiatives as part of the “inisiatif peduli rakyat” (caring nation) by the Ministry of Domestic Trade
and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP).
They aim to rescue surplus food from the manufacturer, wholesaler, hypermarket and hotel
industry; sort and re-distribute it to the identified targeted B40 communities in higher learning
institution (IPT), charity home, welfare center and Program Perumahan Rakyat Termiskin
(PPRT) through our strategic partners to reduce food waste and to help to ease and lessen the
cost of living of the underprivileged Malaysian. 

2.0 Mission And Vision

Mission
Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia targets "Zero Hunger" and "Zero Waste" through the halal and
safe food supply in Malaysia.

Vision
Become the Leader of Food Bank domestically and internationally by 2025.

2.1 Objectives

 To coordinate, plan and carry out the collection of surplus food nationwide.
 Collaborate with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and related industrial players
to create and enhance surplus food management system.
 Help the underprivileged with access to food supplies to reduce cost of living.
3.0 Food Bank Community Program

Food Bank Community Program which was launched in December 2018 have successfully benefited
418,000 households living below the poverty line nationwide.

In implementing Food Bank Community Program, Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia and KPDNHEP linked up
main strategic partners and local non-governmental organisation (NGO) with participating
supermarkets, pasar tani, food producers, restaurants and hotels.

This program is not going to be a one-off or an ad hoc program that only happens once or occasionally
but is a continuous effort which is expected to help the poor people cope with the rising cost of living.

Main Strategic Partners such as Mutiara Food Bank, Food Aid Foundation and KECHARA Soup with local
NGOs will collect groceries from the supermarkets involved in the program such as Tesco, Econsave, The
Store, NSK and SEGI before they distribute them once a week to the target groups in the dedicated
zones.

4.0 FOOD BANK SISWA PROGRAM

Food Bank Siswa Program have benefited 6,870 underprivileged students at 21 public universities since
its initiation in February 2019. Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia targets to help some 20,000 students in 21
public universities by end of 2019, before being expanded to another 103 private universities/ colleges
in 2020. The program also aims to foster the spirit of volunteerism among university students.

The program is conducted through two methods – Food Pantry and Central Kitchen – in campuses.

1. The Food Pantry is a dry food item storage room handled by student associations. Qualified students
can take the food items based on a schedule.

2. The Central Kitchen distributes cooked food items to the students.

5.0 SPECIAL PROJECT - COVID-19 FOOD AID MISSION

The global pandemic of infectious disease Coronavirus (COVID-19) has shaken Malaysia and the rest
of the world. The Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, announced all Malaysian to
self-isolate themselves and #stayathome to contain the virus outbreak from spreading.

The Movement Control Order (MCO), effective since 18 March 2020 has affected many Malaysians
especially the most vulnerable communities such B40 and daily income earners due businesses were
put on hold. Fellow front liners were call to duty and have been working around the clock ever since.

Calling for all helping hands (Government Agencies, Corporate, NGOs and NGIs)

During this hard time, Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia collaborates with several Government Agencies,
Corporate Companies, NGOs and NGIs, working together on logistic and coordination to deliver food
supplies to the underprivileged communities, stranded students and red zones front liners.
