My brother Jaime has been applying for full-time jobs in several months. Last week he received a call
from the Human Resources Director at computer software. The company director asked my brother
Jaime if he could fly to Manila for a job interview. He will not have to pay for himself because the
company offered him a free ticket to Chicago. My brother Jaime happily agreed to come for the
interview. Then, Jaime has been busy preparing himself for the interview. He also went to the shopping
malls to buy a new suite. Jaime is nervous about his interview, but he's looking forward to work in a new
place and I know he will do his best to achieve this opportunity.

There will be a lot of writing in college, and most of the writing will be in the form of an essay. to

know about essays. An essay is a focused written composition, usually from the author’s point of view.
It is non-fictional and informative but can also include narrative. It is usually short – about 500 words.
Examples are essays on political issues, literature reviews, daily life, memories, and reflections. The
basic structure is the 5-paragraph essay – introduction (presenting the thesis statement/claim), two-
three body paragraphs (each presenting evidence to support the claim), and a conclusion (a retelling
of the thesis and summary of the main points). This is not a rule – just a structure for beginners in
essay writing. Academic essays are usually longer (2,000 – 5,000 words) and more formal than literary
essays. Academic essays are logical and factual, and the use of first-person is often discouraged. There
are different types of essays: Descriptive essays – gives details that allow the reader to create a
mental picture of a person, place, object, or event. Narrative essays use a retelling of events to talk
about the change or development of a person. Compare and contrast essays show the similarities and
differences between two or more things. Persuasive essays try to convince the reader to accept an
idea. Knowing what an essay is, the elements, and the format makes writing essays less intimidating
and very doable.
