CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Paper

Cosmetology (kahz-muh-TAHL-uh-jee) is a term used to encompass a
broad range of specialty areas, including hairstyling, nail technology, and
esthetics. Cosmetology is defined as the art and science of beautifying and
improving the skin, nails, and hair and includes the study of cosmetics and their
application. The term comes from the Greek word kosmetikos, meaning skilled in
the use of cosmetics. Archaeological studies reveal that haircutting and hairstyling
were practiced in some form as early as the Ice Age.
The simple but effective cosmetic implements used at the dawn of history
were shaped from sharpened flints, oyster shells, or bone. Animal sinew or strips
of hide were used to tie the hair back or as adornment. Ancient people around the
world used coloring matter on their hair, skin, and nails, and they practiced
tattooing. Pigments were made from berries, tree bark, minerals, insects, nuts,
herbs, leaves, and other materials. Many of these colorants are still used today.
Today, hairstylists have far gentler, no-fade haircolor. Estheticians can
noticeably rejuvenate the skin, as well as keep disorders such as sunspots and mild
acne at bay. The beauty industry has also entered the age of specialization. Now
cosmetologists frequently specialize either in haircolor or in haircutting;
estheticians specialize in esthetic or medical-aesthetic services; and nail
technicians either offer a full array of services or specialize in artificial nail
enhancements, natural nail care, or even pedicures.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

A. Cosmetology
Cosmetology is the treatment of skin, hair and nails and includes, but is
not limited to, manicures, pedicures, application of artificial nails, special
occasion hairstyling, shampooing hair, cosmetic application, body hair removal,
chemical hair relaxers or straighteners, permanent waves, coloring and
highlighting of hair, and hair extensions or wig treatments. A person who is
licensed in cosmetology is called a cosmetologist.
A cosmetologist, sometimes called a beautician, a beauty specialist, or an
esthetician or aesthetician, is a worker who specializes in giving beauty
treatments. The recipients of these treatments are usually women, however there is
a growing number of men. A general cosmetologist is proficient in all forms of
beauty care and can give hair treatments, facials, skin treatments, and nail
treatments. There are specific disciplines of cosmetology that some
cosmetologists may specialize in. The different types of special cosmetologists
include hair stylists, shampooers, manicurists, estheticians and electrologists.
Many cosmetologists specialize in at least one of these categories.
1. Hair Stylist
A hair stylist specializes in the styling of hair, including cutting,
chemical perms (relaxers, curls, waves) and color treatments. Hair stylists
can also apply hair extensions and weaves. Hair stylists can also shampoo
and condition client's hair, though this is not always necessary. Some hair
stylists also give recommendations and perform work on wigs and
hairpieces.
2. Shampoo Technician
The shampoo technician is a sub-category of the hair stylist. A
shampoo tech shampoos and conditions a client's hair to create a balanced
hair care finish for the hair stylist. Shampoo techs are normally only

3
employed by a corporate or concept salons, and large volume beauty salons
that are operated simultaneously.
3. Manicurist
A manicurist specializes in nail care, including manicures,
pedicures, and nail extensions.
4. Esthetician
An esthetician, or aesthetician, specializes in the study of skin care,
including facial treatments, body wraps, including salt glows, waxing as a
form of hair removal, and cosmetic make-up services. Some estheticians
also offer full body skin treatments and other related services. In some
states, estheticians work with dermatologists to offer more services,
including laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing, and many types of
chemical peels.

D. Hair Removal
Hair removal, also known as epilation or depilation, is the deliberate
removal of body hair. Hair typically grows all over the human body. Hair can
become more visible during and after puberty and men tend to have thicker, more
visible body hair than women. Both men and women have visible hair on the
head, eyebrows, eyelashes, armpits, pubic region, arms, and legs men and some
women also have thicker hair on their face, abdomen, back and chest. Hair does
not generally grow on the lips, the underside of the hands or feet or on certain
areas of the genitalia. It can have many causes, including genetics, certain
medications such as steroids, higher levels of certain hormones, and polycystic
ovarian syndrome.
Hair removal may be practised for cultural, aesthetic, hygiene, sexual,
medical or religious reasons. Forms of hair removal have been practised in almost
all human cultures since at least the Neolithic era. The methods used to remove
hair have varied in different times and regions, but shaving is the most common
method.
There are several ways to remove unwanted hair. With most methods, at
least some of the hair will eventually grow back.
1. Shaving

4
Shaving is best for leg, arm, and facial hair. It can, though, cause
ingrown hairs, especially in the pubic region.
5. Plucking
Plucking or tweezing can be painful, but it may be a good option if
you only have a few hairs you want to remove. Times when you might
want to pluck include when you're reshaping your eyebrows or pulling out
a few stray hairs that appear on your face. You should not, however, use
this hair removal method for large areas. It can cause ingrown hairs or
scarring.
6. Depilatory Creams
Hair removal creams, also known as depilatory creams, are
available without a prescription. They're not all the same, so be sure to
read the label. For instance, you shouldn't use a hair removal cream made
for pubic hairs to remove hair on your face.
The chemicals in these products dissolve the hair shaft. Using a
cream improperly for instance, leaving it on too long can burn your skin.
If you have a history of allergic reactions, you should first test a little bit of
the cream on a small area on your arm to make sure you don’t have a bad
reaction to it. Be sure to follow the directions on the cream.
7. Hot Waxing
Hot waxing can be messy and painful and may leave some hairs
behind because they can break off. Infection is one side effect to watch for.
If the wax is too hot, you may get a burn. You should not use this method
if you also use certain types of prescription acne creams (such as Retin-A)
or take isotretinoin. If you do, the wax will pull your skin off. Many
women use this hair removal method in the bikini area and to remove hair
on the upper lip.
8. Threading
Threading is a traditional Indian method of hair removal that some
salons offer. The professionals who do threading use strings they twist in a
pattern and use to pull unwanted hair out.
9. Laser Hair Removal

5
This is one of the longest-lasting methods, but it generally requires
four or more treatments 4-6 weeks apart. It can only be effective on dark
hair.
The laser beam or a light pulse works to destroy the hair bulb. The
treatment can be expensive and sometimes painful, but it can be used on
many parts of the body where unwanted hair appears. Be sure you select a
doctor or technician who is highly trained and knowledgeable.
10. Electrolysis
Electrolysis is done by a professional who places a tiny needle with
an electric current in the hair follicle. There are two primary hair removal
methods with electrolysis: galvanic and thermolytic.
- Galvanic hair removal chemically destroys the hair follicle.
- Thermolytic removal uses heat to destroy the follicle.
11. Medications and Unwanted Hair
If none of these hair removal methods help, you may want to ask
your doctor's advice. There are drugs that inhibit hair growth.
Spironolactone is a pill that may slow or reduce hair growth in
areas that you don’t want hair. It will not get rid of the hair on your scalp
and may actually stimulate growth there.
There is a prescription cream called Vaniqa that's approved by the
FDA for slowing facial hair growth in women. This cream slows growth,
but it will not remove the hair. You apply it to the area twice a day. Once
you stop using the cream, the hair will regrow.

E. Suggest
Hopefully this paper can be a reference or reference for other students. And
the results of the analysis of aesthetics and hair removal can be a better guide to
make it easier for readers to be able to do intermittent hair cutting. We also expect
suggestions and criticisms from readers to achieve perfection in this paper.
