THE HISTORY

1896 - 1899 The Foundation of Odessa Sparkling Wine Factory

The origins of the Odessa Sparkling Wine Company go back to the 19 th century,
when the Russian Emperor Nicolai II confirmed the charter of the joint-stock
company called «South Russian Society of winemaking of Henry Roederer in
Odessa» for the production of sparkling wines and cognacs. The founder of the
Society, French citizen Henry Roederer became the first technical director of the
company. The foundation of the Odessa Sparkling Wine Factory had been laid and
by the end of 1898 the complex of wineries, under the project of the French
architect Charles Boysh was constructed. The entrance arch to the factory had been
decorated with an original ornament where letters ‘F’ and ‘R’, standing for France
and Russia, symbolise friendly relations between the two countries. In 1899 the
official opening of the factory took place and the first sparkling wines were bottled
according to the classic French technology and under the supervision of French
wine specialists. At that time within the Russian Empire there were 6 more
enterprises producing champagne according to classic French technology, 3 of
which were based in the current territory of Ukraine.

1948 – 1991 Impact of Communism

In 1948 the Soviet government issued a number of regulations resulting in the
large–scale development of sparkling wine production in the whole Soviet Union.
It was Stalin’s decision, who considered champagne as a sign of material welfare
to be accessible to Soviet citizens.
Since 1952 the factory of Odessa Sparkling Wines was produced over 450 million
bottles of sparkling wines.
