CAPPADOCIA

C appadocia region was formed 60 million years ago by erosion of soft

layers of lava and ash from Mount Erciyes (Argeus), Mount Hasan and
Mount Güllü composing with wind and rain over millions of years. Human
settlement at the Cappadocia region dates back to the Paleolithic era. The
lands where the Hittites once lived have been one of the most important
centers of Christianity in the later periods. Houses and churches carved
into the caves and rocks turned the region into a huge heaven for
Christians escaping from the dominance of the Roman Empire. The region
of Cappadocia is a place where nature and history integrates. Written
history of Cappadocia, where human settlement dates back to the
Paleolithic era, begins with the Hittites. Hosting trade colonies
throughout history and founding commercial and social bridges between
countries, Cappadocia was one of the important junctions of the Silk Road.

I n the 12th century BC, a dark period began in the region with the
collapse of the Hittite Empire. These Kingdoms lasted until the Persian
invasion in the 6th century BC. In 332 BC, Alexander the Great defeated
the Persians and encountered great resistance in Cappadocia. During this
period, the Kingdom of Cappadocia was established. The Roman power
began to be felt in the region towards the end of the 3rd century BC. In the
middle of 1st century, Kings of Cappadocia were appointed and toppled
from the throne by the Roman Generals. When the last king of Cappadocia
died in 17 AD, the region became a province of Rome.

I n the 3rd century, Christians came to the Cappadocia, which became a

centre for education. Pressure on the Christians increased between
303-308. But Cappadocia was an ideal place to be safeguarded from
pressures and to spread the Christian doctrine. Deep valleys and shelters

SAINT OF KAYAKAPI:
ST. JOHN THE RUSSIAN

T hough there is no exact date of birth for St. John the Russian, it is
predicted to be between 1690-1693 as he was a soldier in the army of Tsar
Peter during the Ottoman - Russian war between 1711-1718. During his
military service, he frequently used the religious teachings that he received
from his family as being a strict Orthodox Christian. As the war continued
intensively near Castle of Azov, the Ottoman army captured him as prisoner.
He was sent, just like the other prisoners to Istanbul. At that time, Ömer Esat
(Eset) who served as Janissary Agha in the Ottoman army took with him to his
hometown Ürgüp after the war in order to get him served as a slave.

S pending the next 12 years of his life at Ömer Esat Agha's Mansion, this
local Saint was a personality loved by both Muslim and Christian
demography of the neighbourhood. He lived in the Kayakapı Neighbourhood
until his death (27th of May 1730).

F eeling love and compassion to humans, animals and all living creatures in
nature during his relatively short life, the Saint was well known to always
walk with arms crossed on his chest and to keep saying the word "Holy God".
HISTORY OF KAYAKAPI
He mostly spent his life between Ömer Esat Agha's house and the Hagia Yorgi

his death. In particular, he was the Saint of those who fell into trouble, the
debilitated patients, the disabled and people in need of remedy.
T he Neighbourhood took the architectural form of today in the 18th and 19th Centuries following the "Tulip Era" marked by Damat
Ibrahim Pasha of Nevsehir, the Grand Vezir of the Ottoman Empire. During this period, Kayakapı also known as "Landowners’
Neighbourhood" in Ürgüp, was adorned by large mansions of the five Aghas (Landowners) who prospered thanks to iltizam (privilege of
collecting taxes on behalf of the Emperor). Although being a Muslim Neighbourhood, the area hosts elements, which have great value for

RESTORATION OF KAYAKAPI
rgüp Municipality's attempt to stop the deterioration of the Kayakapı Neighbourhood and bringing up the tourism potential of the area
Üwas only possible with a private investment company that was concerned and interested of the area. In order to restore the
neighbourhood appliances were needed. Firstly new and updated geologic research was carried out in Kayakapı Neighbourhood and as a
result area was excluded from the scope of the "disaster area" by Ministry of Public Works and Settlement on 20.11.2000. The urban fabric
part of the area was announced as 1/1.000 scale urban protected area by the decision dated 10.02.2001 of the Cultural and Natural
Heritage Preservation Board of Nevşehir. By nationalizing the private properties in this part (funded by the investor) and leasing them, the
model known as "restorate – operate – transfer" was decided to be implemented. Ürgüp Municipality together with the investor company
Kayakapı Tourism Investment Trade Inc. (Kayakapı Premium Caves – Cappadocia) agreed to become the partners of this historical
project.

T he Kayakapı Project is about conserving and restoring the historical structures within Kayakapı Neighbourhood and the surrounding
natural areas in harmony, in order to make it function mainly for tourism purposes. Together with this project, the visitors will
experience the old cave houses and original life of Kayakapı Neighbourhood with modern touches. The target of this investment is; by
conserving and restoring a cultural / natural valued historical neighbourhood, to bring up a historical establishment at the area with high
international standards.
