Creating Engaging and Motivating Learning Environments

Transitioning from face-to-face to online learning can be challenging for all students, so

one of the questions that I wanted addressed within my survey was providing equity to all my

students. Grappling with mathematics can be challenging as a learner, and a struggle to

comprehend at times, let alone navigate through digital tools. Even though majority of my

peers answered yes on having access to technology and Wi-Fi, I currently work in a high needed

area in South Phoenix, a portion of the students don’t have access to either both of the sources

listed above or are missing one of the two, Wi-Fi or technical device. According to a source,

students in a low socioeconomic school, students aren’t exposed, and provided a good amount

of time to explore digital devices unlike a school setting that’s well funded and encouraged to

explore the technology and build a curiosity with the use of technology(Reich, 2019). As a

result, I decided to encourage students by collecting a time frame to guide them onto how to

navigate digital learning tools.

Another situation that I wanted to address and explore was to differentiate and

challenge students despite the variety of comprehension levels; it’s essential to provide a

quality education to all students regardless of background and etc. According to the passage,

one of the first steps is to restructure and reframe adult thinking and encourage teachers to be

optimistic by thinking positively of students potential regardless of given resources; instead of

listing disadvantages, it’s best to work with what’s provided(Reich, 2019). The passage also
2

shared that teachers can then lead and acknowledge the students interest and utilize this,

“like”and integrate within their lesson; creating a meaningful entry point for students(Reich,

2019). So the survey that I created, I decided to ask the participants to share their interests and

hobbies during their free time. Some of the participants' interests were in the arts including

literature, photography, dance and subscription media platforms. As a result I can then

integrate ideas and consider them while lesson planning and create a meaningful experience

for students when they complete the questionnaire survey.
