Human Resource Management

 Human resource management is about the management of the people or


employees in an organization.

 The responsibility of managing employees is first in the hands of the


immediate manager or supervisor of that employee.

 However, many organizations have a separate human resource department


for this purpose.

What are human resources?

 Human resources are the people in the organization.

 People working in an organization are considered one of the key resources


because it is they who help make an organization successful.

Importance of human resource management

 The people in an organization are very important for its success, as they are
needed to produce goods and services and supply them to the customers.

Recruitment and Selection


 This involves attracting candidates when there are vacancies in the
organization through job advertisements (recruitment).
 Then, selecting the best candidate by having interviews (selection).

Wages and Salaries


 The HR department decides on the wages and salaries of the employees.
 These salaries and wages should be sufficient to motivate the people to work
efficiently.
Training
 It is important for the HR department to train their staff so that it improves
the knowledge and skills necessary to perform better in their job.

Good Relationship with Employees


 It is also important for the HR department to communicate with the workers
and consider their problems, ideas and suggestions to improve the
organization, etc.
 Otherwise, the employees will be unsatisfied causing their performance to be
inefficient.

Health and Safety


 The HR department is responsible for the health and safety of the
employees.
 They should provide clean and safe conditions and should abide by the
related regulations and laws.
Eg – Workers involved in construction should be provided with a helmet and
other safety equipment.

Redundancy and Dismissal


 Redundancy means asking some staff to leave the organization because there
is no work available for them.

Eg – If an organization is closing down a branch, then those workers are


given some money and asked to leave.
 Dismissal happens when employees are asked to leave the organization due
to their work or behavior being unsatisfactory.

Eg – An employee who is constantly late for work or who was caught


stealing or who is unable to do the job properly, will be dismissed.
