LITURGY OF THE WORD

PARTS OF THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
1. First Reading

- Psalm is written by David and helps us to reflect

- The reading is taken from the New Testament.
- It is also known as the Epistle or Letters of St.

TRIUNE GOD/HOLY TRINITY ST. LUCY

 God the Father  Lucy’s name means light with the same root as lucid

mother was miraculously healed. Her mother was
thankful and she did not let Lucy to marry the
governor.

arrest of Lucy and she was put to death.
 She bravely faced death and was even praising God
unto her last breath.
 She is the patron saint of the blind and those with
eye troubles.

2.2 TOUCHING OUR HEARTS AND MINDS
ENTHUSIASM means expressing joy in each task as
one gives his best effort.
 Jesus is the GOOD NEWS sent to us by God.
 We can become good news to others when we
make their lives better, safer and happier.
 Becoming a good shepherd is not an easy task.
You have to take good care of the sheep
wholeheartedly so that they can follow the best
way the shepherd taught them. This is similar to
what God does to us. We come to reflect on
Jesus as our Good Shepherd. We need to be
faithful to Him because Jesus continuously give us
comfort and peace.

GOSPEL comes from the Greek word “evangelion”
which means “good news” or “glad tidings”. It tells
about the Kingdom of God.
 It focuses in our salvation through the life of Jesus
Christ offered for us, through His passion, death
and resurrection.
 It is the highlight of the Liturgy of the Word.
 Our Church teaches us that in proclaiming the
Gospel, Jesus Christ is fully present in the
community.
 Gospels can be found in the New testament.
They are written by the four Evangelists. Each of
them had their own point of view and focus about
Jesus and His mission.
The Gospel of Matthew
 - Speaks about Christ as King: ROYALTY (written
by the Jews)
- Matthew, one of the chosen apostles of Jesus,
is the much-hated tax collector who worked
with the Roman empire.
- He was known as LEVI before he was called by
Jesus to become His apostle.
- He is skilled with the pen.
The Gospel of Mark
- Speaks about Christ as Servant: Servanthood
(written to the Romans)
- It is the second book of the New testament.
- It tells about Jesus’ sufferings
- It is a collection of miracle stories,
controversial stories and parables.
- He highlighted in his gospel the public ministry
of Jesus.
The Gospel of Luke
- Speaks about Christ as Man: HUMILITY
(written to the Gentiles/Greeks)
- It is the third book in the New Testament.
- It is also the longest among the Gospels.
- It narrates the paschal mystery f Jesus
- Luke wrote about Jesus’ infancy and narrated
His public ministry, His sufferings, death,
resurrection and His ascension.
The Gospel of John
- Speaks about Christ as GOD: DEITY (written to
the world)
- Deity means divine or holy
- It is the fourth and last Gospel in the New
Testament.
- It tells Jesus’ baptism.
- This Gospel began with the view and
announcement of John the Baptist on his
account at the Jordan River.
- It ends with the death, interment, resurrection
and appearances of Jesus after resurrection.
- John focused his writings on the deeper
explanation on Jesus’ personality.
- The miracles that Jesus performed in Lazarus.
What is the Gospel of Jesus Christ? The good news
of Christ is the good news of His coming to provide
forgiveness of sins and salvation for all who will
believe in Him.

GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL
 Gabriel means “man of God” or “God has shown
him might.”
 The angel announced to Prophet Daniel the
prophecy of the seventy weeks.
 He was the angel who appeared to Prophet
Zechariah to announce the birth of St. John the
Baptist.
 He also announced to Mary that she will bear a
Son, who would be conceived of the Holy Spirit,
Son of the Most High and Savior of the world.
 Feast day is September 29th together with St.
Michael and St. Raphael.
 He is the patron of communication workers.
 He is also the patron saint of messengers, those
who work for broadcasting and
telecommunications such as radio and television.
2.3 MANIFESTING HIS PRESENCE
ALERTNESS includes being aware of what is taking
place around us so that one can have the right
response.
 The homily helps us understand the Gospel
better.
 The homily motivates us to live a holy life.
 When you get to represent someone, you agree
to become his or her voice. You are trusted to
speak, act or maybe decide on their behalf.
When you do so, you become a messenger.

HOMILY
- Comes from the Greek word “homilia” which
means to have unity or hold verbal
communication with a person.
- Commonly known as SERMON.
- We need to listen to various readings.
- God is always present in the WORD. He is the
Word who become flesh.
- Whenever the priest speaks about the Word, he
is making God present to us.
- In the Liturgy of the Word, we get to listen to
various reading from the Old and New
testaments.
- Jesus is truly present in His own word when the
Gospel is proclaimed.
- God Himself speaks to us.
- The homily is delivered to us by the priest,
bishop or pope. It should not be given by a
layperson.
- In all Sundays of the year, a Homily should be
given.
What should we do during homily?

5. Do not think of other things, focus your attention
to the Homily

7. Don’t be sleepy during the Mass. Take enough

ST. THERESE OF LISIEUX
 She is a saint with little flower and one of the
saints who has great love for the Eucharist.
 Her mother died when she was still young.
 At age 15, she entered the Carmelite Order.
 She is known for her humility, simplicity,
goodness and patience in continuing the delicate
physical suffering caused by her sickness.
 She loved to write.
 She had a journal where she told her story on
how she can show her great love for God even in
small things that she does in the convent.

 What we believe in is important. It reflects our
decision and directs our actions.
 What we believe serves as a guiding post in what
we do. It becomes the basis of our decisions. It is
important that we are aware of it.
 God gives us the help of the Holy Spirit to enlighten
our minds to understand the truth.
 Peter, through the gift of faith, knew that Jesus was
the Messiah, the Holy One of God, and he believed
in His words.
