Part 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Change is the only permanent thing in the world. The world is changing at a rapid

pace, driven by science and technology. The speed of innovation these days can happen in

the blink of an eye. Over the years, technology has revolutionized our world and our daily

lives, and it is the duty of human to respond to this changing world.

Advancements in the field of technology have allowed us to work on things that are so

small that you would need a microscope to see them. One of the technologies which had

become mainstream and widely adopted today is the nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is

moving ahead in leaps and bounds.

Before the term nontechnology was used, the ideas and concepts behind

nanoscience and nanotechnology started with a talk entitled “There’s Plenty of Room at the

Bottom”, (Feynman, 1959). In his talk, Feynman described a process in which scientists

would be able to manipulate and control individual atoms and molecules. Over a decade

later, in his explorations of ultraprecision machining, Professor Norio Taniguchi coined the

term nanotechnology. It wasn't until 1981, with the development of the scanning tunneling

microscope that could "see" individual atoms, that modern nanotechnology began.

Nanotechnology can actually revolutionize a lot of electronic product, procedures and

applications. Nanotechnology can also benefit energy sector. Another industry that can

benefit from nanotechnology is the manufacturing sector. In the medical world,

nanotechnology is also seen as a boon since these can help with creating what is called

smart drugs.

While it holds promise for society and capable of revolutionizing our approaches to

common problem; like any other things that is created by humans, there is still the other side

of the coin. Its development is the possible loss of jobs in the traditional farming and

manufacturing industry. Atomic weapons can now be more powerful and more destructive.

Since these particles are very small, problems can actually arise from the inhalation of these.

And presently, nanotechnology is very expensive and developing it can cost a lot of money.

Nanotechnology is no longer in its stage of infancy and scientists are developing new

ways to work on a nanoscale. In fact, nanotechnology has been helping people in their daily

aspects of life since the 1990s. We are now on the 21st Century, but many of us are still

uninformed about nanotechnology and its applications. The general public has no firm

foundation to understand nanotechnology. The growing importance of nanotechnology in

industry and society has not been accompanied by a widespread understanding of the

subject among the general public. To appreciate the beauty of nanotechnology, we need to

understand these small objects are. The people who use this technology should be

considered by scientists in advancing nanotechnology. Thus, we could analyze the possible

risks and benefits.

Nanotechnology awareness is very important for AMA Online Education College

Students because an individual can function more effectively if she or he is familiar with and

has the basic understanding of nanotechnology. And knowing the possible negative effects

can help an individual take steps to identify and minimize the so that you can still enjoy the

positive aspects of nanotechnology. Hence, the aim of this study.
