CVE30002 (HES3121) Design of Steel Structures

Tutorial 7: Fastener Groups

Question 1

An end-plate is connected to a supporting member by four M20 8.8/S bolts as shown in

Figure 1. The supported member exerts on the end-plate a design load of 100kN vertically
downward and a design out-of-plane moment of 20kNm. Are the bolts adequate to transmit
the given design load and moment?

Figure 1.

Notes:
- The capacity of the end-plate does not need to be checked.

Question 2

A rectangular lug is attached to a frame by three fillet welds as shown Figure 2. It carries a
load P acting at 45° to the vertical at a point on the horizontal centre-line and 400mm from
the vertical weld. The welds are made with E48 electrodes and all have same size of 6mm.
Determine the maximum design load (P) that can be transmitted by the welds.

Question 3

A tube is attached to a supporting member via an end-plate as shown in Figure 3.

(a) If the bolts attaching the end-plate are M20 8.8/S, what is maximum design load (P) that
can be transmitted by the bolts?
(b) If the bolts are fully tensioned (8.8/TF), what is the maximum serviceability load that can
be transmitted by the bolts without slip?

Figure 3.
Notes:
- The capacity of the end-plate does not need to be checked.
- Refer to Table on Page 3 for properties of bolts.

Question 4

A steel lug is welded to another member using 6mm E48 fillet welds as shown in Figure 4.
What is the design capacity of the welds if the load is applied:

(a) in their plane and along their longitudinal direction without eccentricity?

(b) in the same direction but out-of-plane with eccentricity of 75mm?

(a) (b)
