Song Review Assignment

The song I chose to review is Free, by Perri Jones. The thing I liked most about this song

was how it resonated with the person I am becoming, and how I choose to live my life. This song

has encouraged me to continue to be myself and not let the opinions of others or my

surroundings affect me. I chose this song because it helped me through a difficult time in my life.

When I found this song, I was at a place in my life where I was trying to figure myself out. I was

having a trouble figuring out who I was. I’ve never attempted to listen to another song made by

Perri Jones but based on this song I believe that I should. I admire her cadence and delivery in

the song. I believe she executed it perfectly and left a valuable lesson.

Throughout the song there are not many rhetorical devices used. She uses repetition a

couple of times throughout the song. One instance is from line 22- 24 when she states, “I choose

not to follow I choose not to lead I choose simply to allow myself to be.” She used this

statement to get her point across that she had multiple options, but in the end, she chose to be

herself. This is also a contradicting statement to the popular saying “be a leader and not a

follower.” She spins the saying around and says she’s not going to be either, because she chooses

to be herself. Her rhetorical stance in the song is that everyone should try to be themselves. This

is best seen during the chorus. She proved that she could get to a point in her life where she is

content with herself and so should everyone else.

In my opinion, this song was meant to tell the story of Perri Jones path to self- awareness.

In the opening line of the song she states, “I don’t need validation to tell me who I am.” Simply

meaning she doesn’t need the opinion of others for reassurance about herself. In the chorus she

states “I’m human, but I’m comfortable with me. That clearly means she’s comfortable with who

she is. She explains that she has had some rough life experiences, but she has accepted them and

moved on. Even though the song is about her experience there is still a deeper message for the

audience. She wants the audience to know that facing trials and tribulations are normal, but you

can’t let it affect you in the long run. She inspires her listeners to get to the level of self-

awareness that she’s at. It would only be beneficial for them in the end. The overall message of

the song is that you can’t always carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. There will be a

time when you need to focus on yourself in order to be “free”.

Song Lyrics
Perri Jones- Free

I don't need validation

To tell me who I am
I have lived the situation

And I've learned to understand

There's no such thing as limitations
I exceed expectations
I have learned to love me

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah

I'm free
I'm human but I'm comfortable with me
I'm capable, got everything I need
I'm focused and I'm living out my dreams
I feel
My family, their love surrounding me
There's nothing in this world I'd rather be
Than me
I'm free

Every life has a story

Every life has a plan
And some of us chase the glory
Some just do the best we can

I choose not to follow

I choose not to lead
I choose simply to allow myself to be

I'm free
I'm human but I'm comfortable with me
I'm capable got everything I need
I'm focused and I'm living out my dream, yeah
I feel
My family, their love surrounding me
There's nothing in this world I'd rather be
Than me
I'm free
