Lesson Plan

Topic: Introduction to the role of biochar in remediating contaminated soil

Duration: 1.5 Hour (90 min)

Description: The purpose of the activity is to introduce students with soil sampling,
processing, analysis, and application of biochar to assess its effects on
heavy metal concentration in the soil.

Pre-requisites: Visit the classroom one day before the course begins to make sure
everything is well-prepared
Methods: Orientation using verbal and PowerPoint presentation: 20 min

Reflective JIGSAW discussion: 10 min

Introducing the students to the lab and instruments operation: 30 min

Individual Student Activity: IE and IR (10 min)

Parking Big Ideas: 10 min


Required: Whiteboard, Multimedia Projector, Soil Sampling Tools, Selected Lab

Learning Objectives
After completing this session and associated learning opportunities, participants will be able to:

Orientation (20 min)

●Welcoming the students (5 min)

●The session will find out what the students already know about sample processing, preparation
of the chemical solutions, and determination of heavy metal content in the soil.

Reflective JIGSAW Discussion (10 min)

Group discussion session and create questions about biochar

Lab Session (30 min)

Students will pay a visit to the lab to get familiar with the lab instruments

Individual Activity: IE and IR (10 min)

Read a selected passage from the article about heavy metal availability in the soil and answer the
questions at the end

Park Big Ideas (10 min)

Explain why biochar is used extensively in remediation studies

Close Session (5 min)
