HOMEOSTASIS

Is from the Greek word "Homeo-" meaning "similar to" or "like"

And
the English word "-stasis" meaning "balance“.
3
HOMEOSTASIS

 The steady state is the optimum level for the body functions
 Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal state in a changing environment.
 In other words, it is how everything from individual cells to an entire organism maintain a
stable internal balance to stay healthy.
 Homeostasis is the property in which our own body sustains the stability of internal organs in
order for a living organism to maintain life.
4
Homeostasis

All organisms must maintain a constant internal

environment to function properly
➢ Temperature
➢ pH
➢ ion levels
➢ hormones
What is homeostasis? 5
The body uses so much energy, even during sleep, because it must maintain a
constant internal environment.

This process of keeping things the same is

called homeostasis.

A series of automatic control systems

ensures that the body maintains a constant
temperature, and steady levels of water,
ions and blood sugar.

Homeostasis allows the body’s cells to work

at their optimum.
6
Examples of homeostasis

one great and very common examples of homeostasis is diabetes, this disease has to do
with the cardiovascular system the glucose or sugar in the blood stream must maintain a
certain level our body automatically produces insulin to keep it where the blood level
should be.
Examples of Homeostasis
 Ratios of water and minerals.
 Body temperature.
 Chemical levels.
7
How does disease affect homeostasis?

 Aging is a general example of disease as a result of homeostatic

imbalance.
 As an organism ages, weakening of feedback loops gradually results in an
unstable internal environment. This lack of homeostasis increases the risk for
illness and is responsible for the physical changes associated with Aging.
8
What depends on the body's ability to
maintain homeostasis?

 The tendency to maintain a stable, relatively constant internal

environment is called homeostasis.
 The body maintains homeostasis for many factors in addition to
temperature. For instance, the concentration of various ions in your blood
must be kept steady, along with pH and the concentration of glucose.

Homeostasis.

The internal environment is dynamic and equilibrium (steady) state

 dynamic?
 equilibrium (steady) state?

 What parameters are homeostatically regulated?

 Chemical factors—
 Physical factors—
11
Regulation of homeostasis by
Negative feedback--A

1. Definition– change in a factor (controlled variable) triggers a physiological response

that seeks to restore the factor by OPPOSING the initial change
2. Example—control of room/body temperature
Regulation of homeostasis by 12

Negative feedback--B

Three components of a control system

A. Sensor (receptor)– monitors the control variable (for example, room temp.); what is the
sensor?
B. Integrating (control) center– it compares the sensor’s input with the set point and sends
instructions to effector
C. Effector– action component that . . .
13
Positive feedback & rapid change--A

1. Definition– change in a factor triggers a physiological response that

AMPLIFIES an initial change

2. Example— in the birth of a baby; how?

14
A system in homeostasis needs

 Sensors to detect changes in the internal environment

 A comparator to fix the set point of the system

 Effectors which bring the system back to the set point

 Feedback control. Negative feedback stops the system over

compensating (going too far)

 A communication system to link the different parts together.

15
What depends on the body's ability to
maintain homeostasis?

It regulates
 Temperature
 Glucose
 Toxins
 Blood Pressure
 pH
16
three examples of daily activities that
affect homeostasis.

 Temperature,
 glucose levels,
 ability lymphatic system.
17
When does homeostasis happen?

homeostasis happens every year, every month, ever day, every hour,
every minute maybe? wrong!... homeostasis happens every second of
your life from the beginning to death and beyond.
18
Why does homeostasis happen?

 Homeostasis happens because your body struggles and does what it can
to stay alive
19
How does the scientific method come in
during homeostasis.

 one way the scientific method is involved during homeostasis is yourself

when your body needs "fuel" or food you get hungry and eventually it
begins to growl.
20
How Do cells Maintain homeostasis

Cells maintain homeostasis in 4 ways:

1. Obtain and use energy.
2. Make new cells.
3. Exchange materials.
4. Eliminate wastes.
Saving energy? 21

Imran has decided to save energy by staying in bed all day.

How much of his energy do you think this will save?

Surprisingly, the answer is only about 30%.

The other 70% keeps his body temperature at 37 °C, and the solutions
around his cells at just the right concentration.
