Rough Draft of the second quarter project: Cell Storybook

 Define the terms using complete textbook/scientific descriptions. (1pt each)

 Use the word in a sentence of your own words showing your understand the meaning. (1pt each)
 Insert a picture representing each word. MUST BE HAND DRAWN. (1 pt each)

The idea is to organize the terms that will be used in your book, but you need to know what the terms mean
and how they will be used relating to cells before you can write a story.

a. Prokaryote
 Definition: A cell that lacks a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles; includes archaea and bacteria
 Sentence: Prokaryote cells evolved first and gave rise to eukaryote cells.
 Picture:

b. Eukaryote
 Definition: A cell containing a nucleus and other membrane bound organelle
 Sentence: Animals such as cats and dogs have eukaryotic cells.
 Picture:

c. Importance of small cell size

 Definition: Small cells can better take up sufficient nutrients and oxygen to service their cell
volume.
 Sentence: Small cells are important because they have a greater ratio of surface area to volume.
 Picture:

d. Unicellular
 Definition: Has only one cell to carry out all life functions
 Sentence: A simple creature that has only one cell with no nucleus is called unicellular
 Picture:

e. Multicellular
 Definition: Has many cells to carry out all life functions
 Sentence: Around 1 billion years ago the first multicellular organisms emerged.
 Picture:

f. Stem Cells
 Definition: Cell that can continuously divide and differentiate into various other kinds of
cells/tissues
 Sentence: Stem cells from body fat has been used to produce insulin.
 Picture:
g. Organelle
 Definition: Well defined, intracellular bodies that perform specific functions for the cell.
 Sentence: All the cellular organelles may be seen in detail.
 Picture:
Mitochondria
Golgi Endoplasmic reticulum
microtubules

h. Organelle of your choice (Ex:

Chloroplast or Golgi Body) –
 Definition: Organelle found in cells of plants and some other organisms that captures the energy
from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy; contains DNA
 Sentence: Chloroplasts are very sensitive to light.
 Picture:

i. Plasma membrane
 Definition: Covers a cell's surface and acts as a barrier between the inside and the outside of a
cell.
 Sentence: The virus then passes through the cell membrane.
 Picture:

j. Nucleus
 Definition: A part of the cell containing DNA and RNA and responsible for growth and
reproduction
 Sentence: He discovered the nucleus of the cell.
 Picture:

k. DNA
 Definition: A nucleic acid found in the nucleus of all living cells, which carries the organism's
hereditary information.
 Sentence: You get the DNA from the bodies?
 Picture:

l. Mitochondria
 Definition: Mitochondria are the structures within cells that produce energy
 Sentence: The energy produced by mitochondria is essential for cell functions.
 Picture

m. Ribosomes
 Definition: Non membrane bounded organelles responsible for protein synthesis; found in eukaryotes
and prokaryotes
 Sentence: Ribosomes are vital to the survival of any organism.
 Picture:
n. Growth
 Definition: Positive change in size and number
 Sentence: The growth of the plant is slowed down when there is not much sunlight
 Picture:

o. Homeostasis
 Definition: A tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state; the regulation of any
aspect of body chemistry, such as blood glucose, around a particular level.
 Sentence: Maintenance of blood glucose homeostasis is of paramount importance to the survival
of the human organism.
 Picture:

p. Metabolism/nutrition
 Definition: The sum of all chemical reactions in the body
 Sentence: The body's metabolism is slowed down by extreme cold
 Picture:

q. Differentiation (specialization)
 Definition: Process of transformation into a different cell type
 Sentence: Among the Green Algae the differentiation of cells is comparatively slight.
 Picture:

r. Diffusion
 Definition: He random movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration of those
molecules to an area of lower concentration
 Sentence: There are data on the rates of diffusion of molecules.
 Picture:

s. Osmosis
 Definition: The diffusion of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane, from an
area of lower water potential. (Lower concentration of water molecules)
 Sentence: This filter purifies the water through osmosis
 Picture:

t. Binary fission
 Definition: Bacterial asexual reproduction that involves only one individual, or "parent"
 Sentence: The cell wall is important for cell division, which, in most bacteria, occurs by binary
fission.
