BSAMT-III Assignment in AMT 311 TTH 1-2pm

TITAN 3D

Configuration: Two stages plus 2 side boosters

Side boosters

Dry Mass: 33,798 (x2)

Propellant Mass: 192,435 (x2)

First Stage

Dry Mass/Structural Mass: 5,443 kg

Propellant Mass: 111,130 kg

Second Stage

Dry Mass: 2,653

Propellant Mass: 26,535

Payload Mass: 12,300 kg

Total Mass of the rocket

Dry Mass = 2*(33,798) + 5,443 kg + 2,653 kg=75,674 kg

Propellant Mass = 2*192,435 + 111,130 + 26,535= 522,535 kg

Rocket Mass = 75,674 + 522,535 + 12,300= 610,327 kg

Mass Distribution

Structure: (75,674/610,327)*100 = 12.40%

Propellant: (522,535/610,327)*100 = 85.66%

Payload: (12,300/610,327)*100 = 2.01%

Interpretation:

1.)Which portion of the rocket takes up a large chunk of its mass and which took the
smallest?

- The portion of the rocket with the large chunk of its mass was the propellant that has a
total of 85.66% while the smallest rockets mass was the Payload which has the 2.01%.

2.) How does this affect the cost of launching a rocket?

- Price is either the amount of money that the customer pays to the seller for a booster as it
goes out the plant door or the amount charge a customer for a turnkey launch service. The
price the customer pays can be very different from the actual post to build the booster or
provide the launch service. The price, for the commercial article, is only set by the market.
The seller cannot be charge the higher value than the offered by the competitors for a
launch vehicle of the same reliability and capability. The cost actually producing its product,
in commercial market, that has a very little to do with the price of an article.
3. How important is optimization to rockets given your results?

- It is very important by optimizing the results of the TITAN III D rocket because it has many
success results by launching the rocket into the space.
