Prisoners of Technology

The conflict of banning cell phones has become a worldwide spreading issue that has turned
the table for millions of students who depend on their cell phones every day, implementing this law
would be crucial for students who rely on the resources their cell phones avail but behind the heated
argument lies the truth between cell phones being the freedom students have always desired or the
harsh reality of students being prisoners of their phones.

Firstly, a study by the researchers at The University of British Columbia shows that cell phones
have a negative effect on socializing with other individuals, this proves that a student at class will most
likely ignore the presence of their teacher and use their cell phone to their content. The effects of cell
phones can change a student’s behaviour at school, student’s whose time is consumed by their cell
phone will have the absence of sleep and the loss of energy when it comes to school participation.

Adding up, an experiment was conducted that the more time a student spent on their phone,
the less they interact with their family and friends. Cell phones act as a substitute to human connection,
because if a child looks at a blanket or a teddy bear as something that would provide them comfort then
a cell phone is thought to be in a similar manner as it gives pleasure and enjoyment to people but comes
with a price.

Cell phones are here to provide convenience, to help students with work that are time
consuming and difficult to do however students can abuse their freedom by cheating and using at the
wrong time. There are other resources that can act as a replacement to cell phones which are the Library
or the Computer Laboratory.

Cell phones help us connect digitally but we are still disconnected from reality, students can
become so addicted to their phones that appreciating the beauty around them will become a blur. “I fear
the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots”.
