Past Simple

Actions finished in a concrete moment in the past.

Aux → DID
(+) Suj + verb (past)
(-) Suj + did not + verb (inf sin to)
(?) did + Suj + verb?

Past Continuous
Actions which happened during a time in the past
but we don’t know when they started or finished.
AUX→ verb to be (was/were)

(+) Suj + was/were + verb-ing

(-) Suj +was/were not + verb-ing
(?) was/were + Suj + verb-ing?
These two verb tenses can be found in three
different cases.
1º) Sucesion de acciones. Se realiza una acción, ésta
termina, y comenzamos otra. Cuando la segunda
termina, comenzamos una tercera acción y asi
sucesivamente. → expresadas en Past Simple.

(Puede suceder qué entre esas acciones

terminadas, se cuele una que esté sucediendo
mientras. Que además no tenemos porqué saber
cuándo empieza o termina)→ en past cont.
Yesterday, I woke up at eleven o´clock, I went to
the kitchen, I had breakfast, I decided to have a
shower but my brother was having a shower.

2º) Una acción que estaba sucediendo, y es

(past cont)
interrumpida o finalizada por otra.
(past simple)
…I was walking in the park ….. I broke my leg.
While / when / As

99% while/as → past cont.

50% → when past s /past cont.
3º) Dos acciones sucediendo a la vez sin
interrumpirse la una a la otra.
I was listening to music while my mother was
watching TV.

USED TO
Va relacionado con Usually pero….
Usually se usa en presente y Used to se usa en
pasado.
Usually es un adv de freq y expresa acciones que
realizamos o que venimos realizando desde hace
tiempo con una periodicidad.

Si yo juego al futbol de forma habitual → usually

Si yo de pequeño jugaba al futbol de forma
habitual, y lo sigo haciendo → usually

Used → se usa para expresar que hacíamos una

acción en el pasado y a dia de hoy ya no la
hacemos.
Si yo de pequeño jugaba al futbol y ya no juego
➔ Used to.

Be used to + verb -ing → estar acostumbrado
Get used to + verb -ing → acostumbrarse

Se conjugan en función del tiempo verbal que

usemos.
