New hedgehog themed café opens in Indianapolis

A small African Pygmy hedgehog wakes up in a tiny iron cage. Its handlers place it into

another small box to be poked and prodded for hours. A daily occurnace at Indy’s new Kawaii

Hedgehog Café.

The Kawaii Hedgehog Café is opening next month, Thursday Oct. 15, to the dismay of

several animal rights groups. Animal welfare activists are concerned that the animals are being

mistreated. President Adam Silver of The Humane Society of the United States, Adam Silver

said “There’s precedent here; we have seen it with owl eateries and cat cafés and what we’re

seeing is the animals really aren’t getting the treatment or care they deserve.”

For a business whose primary source of revenue is hedgehogs, proper care should be

quintessential for a successful enterprise. However, it seems owners are willing to sacrifice the

health and happiness of the animals in order to turn a profit. 1532 Massachusetts Ave. will be the

site of inhumane and unethical treatment of animals for years to come.
