America’s first Kawaii Hedgehog Café is opening in downtown Indianapolis on April 1, 2021

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 16, 2021)-- Start your day by enjoying a coffee date with a hedgehog. Jill

and Mark Trend of Indianapolis are opening the Kawaii Hedgehog Café where customers get to take a

break from everyday stress in a safe, relaxing environment while drinking coffee and petting live

hedgehogs.

Upon arrival, customers are required to clean their hands before touching the hedgehogs and are

given an instruction sheet as well as an optional pair of gloves in case they feel uncomfortable handling

the animals. They are then allowed to choose one of the hedgehogs that they want to meet. An

employee helps guide the customer through the handling process and tells them a little about the

individual hedgehog. The health and safety of the hedgehogs is a high-priority issue understood by

those who work at the cafe. “While we want to create a new and exciting time for customers, we also

love our hedgehogs and want them to be happy. That alone will improve the experience for the

customer as well,” says owner, Jill Trend.

In order to maintain this goal, hedgehogs are tended to by six highly qualified hedgehog

handlers who adopt a few of the animals into their care. This way, handlers are able to understand the

moods and needs of the animals. The hedgehogs are fed a healthy diet and enjoy a spacious home that

is regularly maintained. They are also frequently checked by a local veterinarian to prevent disease

spread and ensure the health of the hedgehogs and those around them.

The Trends want to make sure that both customers and hedgehogs feel safe and comfortable

during their time there. Enjoying a cup of coffee in the company of the hedgehogs can be a relaxing

experience that allows customers to free themselves from daily stresses, according to the owners.

Inspired by themed cafes from Japan, this new location takes in 25 rescued and domesticated

African Pygmy hedgehogs. While enjoying the company of the animals, a total of 50 customers are

allowed in the cafe and may purchase a food or coffee item, for 30 minutes of time with the hedgehogs.

A large crowd is anticipated for the opening of America’s first hedgehog cafe and Mark and Jill Trend

invite everyone to join them in celebrating the grand opening of the Kawaii Hedgehog Café.
