ASSIGNMENT 2
1. What is the left hand generator rule?

The left-hand rule is explained if the thumb and first two fingers of the left
hand are arranged at right angles to each other on a conductor and the
hand oriented so that the first finger points in the direction of the
magnetic field and the middle finger in the direction of the induced
current then the thumb will point in the direction of the conductor
motion.

2. What is an AC generator?

An AC generator is an electric generator that converts mechanical energy

into electrical energy in form of alternative emf or alternating current. In an
AC generator, the coil through which current flows is fixed and the magnet
usually moves. The south and north poles of the magnet make the current
flow in opposite directions, thereby creating an alternating current.

3. What is a DC generator?

A DC generator is an electrical machine whose main function is to convert

mechanical energy into electricity. When conductor slashes magnetic flux,
an emf will be generated based on the electromagnetic induction principle
of Faraday’s Laws. This electromotive force can cause a flow of current
when the conductor circuit is closed. The coil in a DC generator is not fixed;
rather it rotates in a fixed field. The two ends of the coil are attached to the
commutator, which balances the charges to and from the generator, thus
resulting in a current that does not alter direction.

4. What does the left hand rule indicate in terms of a coil of wire?
The left hand rule tells that the fingers point in the direction of the electron
flow with in a coil of wire from negative to positive while the extended
thumb indicating the direction of the north pole.

5. If an iron bar is removed from the center of coil, and the current is held
constant, what will happen to the strength of the magnetic field?

The magnetic will decrease since the primary role of the iron core is to
increase the magnetic field to produce electromagnet.

6. What is the right hand motor rule?

The right-hand motor rule is explained by placing the thumb, first finger,
and middle finger of the right hand at angles to one another. If the first
finger is pointed in the direction of field flux, and the middle finger is in the
direction of conductor current (electron direction), then the thumb points
in the direction of conductor motion.
