Learning Objectives Students will be able to identify the four initial provinces in confederation and the to identify 3
provinces that would soon join.
Students will know the reasons why the Canadian Government pursued a policy of western
expansion.
Students will be able to understand the reason for both Metis Rebellions. Specifically, they
will understand the regions where each one took place (since they seem to want to know this
on the exam) and the outcomes of both rebellions. They will demonstrate this within a
comparison chart.

Essential Question(s) What were the original 4 provinces in Canada? Which provinces joined soon after?
What were the reasons for Canada pursuing westward expansion?
What were the motivations for each Metis Rebellion? What was the result of these rebellions?

Metis Rebellion (Red River Rebellion) and the Second Metis

I’ll give them ten minutes or so to do it and then we will go
over it as a class. This could also be given as homework to
give students.
