Fusion Inhibitor

This agent acts at a different site than do other HIV antivirals.


Therapeutic Action To prevents the fusion of the virus with the
human cellular membrane, which prevents the
HIV-1 virus
from entering the cell.

Indication It indicates agents to treat adults and children


older than 6 years who have evidence of HIV-1
replication despite ongoing antiretroviral
therapy.

Contraindication Enfuvirtide is contraindicated in nursing


mothers with hypersensitivity to any part of the
medication.

Adverse Effect It should be used with caution when


pulmonary disease or pregnancy is present.
Insomnia, depression, peripheral neuropathy,
nausea, diarrhea, pneumonia, and reactions at
the injection site have been correlated with the
medication.

Nursing Consideration / Nursing Implication Patient & Family Education


 Report promptly S&S of infection at SC
injection sites: increased heat, redness,
pain, or oozing.
 Report promptly S&S of pneumonia:
cough with fever, rapid breathing,
shortness of breath.
 Do not breast feed while taking this
drug.
