2
Why is Indoor Air Quality Essential ?
• According to, the World Health Organization (WHO)
almost 4 million people die per year from illness
spread by indoor air pollution,

• Air pollution is responsible for 14% of global

cardiovascular events

• Illness caused by household air pollutants:

 stroke,
 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD),
 cardiac failure
 lung cancer

3
We Are What We Breathe - Indoor Air Quality (IQA)
• Indoor air is 2 to 5 times worse than outdoor air.

• Most people spend 90% of their time indoors.

• 50% of illnesses are caused by poor IQA.

• The average home contains over 25 gallons of

hazardous chemicals.

• Air pollution is partly responsible for the spread of

Covid-19

4
What Affects - Indoor Air Quality (IQA)
The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has
defined 3 key elements to controlling and improving
indoor air quality (IAQ):

These are:

• Source Control (PM2.5- VOC –CO-CO2- NO2-Ozone)

• Ventilation

• Air cleaning

5
• The term fine particles, or

particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5),

refers to tiny particles or droplets in

the air that are two and one half

microns or less in width.

• There are about 25,000 microns in

an inch. the PM2.5 size range would

be about thirty times smaller than

that of a human hair.

6
• Particles in the PM2.5 size range are able to

travel deeply into the respiratory tract,

reaching the lungs.

• Exposure to fine particles can cause high rates

of chronic bronchitis, reduced lung function

and increased mortality from lung cancer and

heart disease. People with breathing and

heart problems, children and the elderly may

be particularly sensitive to PM2.5.

The standards stipulates that PM2.5 not exceed 10 μg/m³ annual mean 7
VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds)
- Gaseous elements that can cause odors and
irritations. Indoor sources include, cleaning
products, personal products, furnishings,
carpeting, wall coverings, paints, etc.

- VOC’s can also be brought in from outdoor

sources, fumes, emissions, traffic, etc.

- VOC’s are a major cause of “Sick Building

Syndrome”. Identification and addressing of
chemical sources inside and outside a space
must be considered as well as selection of
building materials, etc.

8
Other indoor pollutants
and their effects on human health
Carbon monoxide stops your body from using the oxygen it needs to work normally. You
Carbon monoxide (CO) may experience tiredness, headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and a fast heart
rate. If the concentration of carbon monoxide is high enough, you could die.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) irritates the throat, eyes, nose, and respiratory tract.
Mold can trigger an allergic reaction in some people. Symptoms can include nasal
Mold stuffiness, eye or throat irritation, swelling, coughing or wheezing, headaches, or skin
irritation.
Radon Being exposed to elevated levels of radon increases your risk of getting lung cancer.
Ozone (O3) DNA damage, lung damage, asthma, decreased respiratory functions
Carbon monoxide
Fatigue, chest pain, impaired vision, reduced brain function
(CO2)
Asthma and allergies Respiratory infections, sensitization, respiratory allergic diseases
Biological allergens
and wheezing
Cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, allergies, lung cancer, irritation and
Aerosols
discomfort
Microorganism Fever, digestive problems, infectious diseases, chronic respiratory illness

Microorganism: Bacteria, viruses, and fungi are carried by people, animals, and soil and plants

9
Air Cleaning Systems
 Contaminants brought into a space or
generated within the space need to be
addressed and removed.
 Filtration is the most prevalent from of air
cleaning in commercial HVAC systems.
 Filters are rated by the particle capture
efficiency. One rating is called MERV
(Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value).
 There are many other methods of air
cleaning including Bi-Polar Ionization, UV,
Electronic Air Cleaning, etc.

10
Air Filters
 Filters are rated by the particle capture
efficiency. One rating is called MERV
(Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value).
 Standard filters do not affect VOC gasses,
virus, minimal effect on odors or micro-
organisms.
 Higher efficiency filters will increase static
pressure. Higher MERV Filters may demand
bigger return ducts.

Covid-19 size
0,125-0,3 microns

11
Germicidal UVC lamps

 UV systems work by sterilizing microbial elements (molds, bacteria) that pass

through the UV light field. UV can be very effective at keeping conditioning coils
clean. UV does not affect VOC gasses, odors.
 UV needs 0,40 seconds of exposure time so not effective as an air cleaning device. At
7 m/s of airflow you would need 2,8 meter of UV bulbs.
 UV light exposure is dangerous to humans.
 Passive technology which relies on bringing the contaminant through the light field
to be affected. 12
Bi-Polar (BIP) Ionization
 BIP systems apply voltage to a dielectric barrier
discharge (DBD) to form negative and positive
air ions, which are then supplied into a space to
increase ion levels.

 Ions are produced alternately 60 times per

second so measurable quantities are saturated
into the occupied space.

 DBD ions can live up to 300 seconds so can travel

very far for the device and get to target.

13
Ions and Air Quality
 In the most pristine environments there are
naturally higher ion levels.
 These levels fall as we enter into more
populated and polluted environments.
 Air ions are nature’s air cleaning method and
contribute to the effect of helping clean the
atmosphere by removing particulates and other
pollutants.
 Ions can also be artificially generated by
manmade indoor air purification technologies
enhanced to help clean indoor air exactly like
mother nature does.
 How many ions are there in the air we breathe?
While there are 4 to 5 thousand ions per cubic
meter on the seaside and in nature, this levels
drops down to 20 to 50 per cubic meter in
offices.

14
How AtmosAir Technology Works

 Air carries oxygen molecules over the dielectric

barrier (bi-polar ion tube).

 The bi-polar ion tube produces positively and

negatively charged air ions.

 Negatively and positively charged air ions are

attracted to and bond with oppositely charged
airborne pollutants.

 Interactions occur reduce contaminant levels

and produce cleaner air.

15
Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization

1. Particle Reduction

2. VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) Control

3. Micro-Organisms (Bacteria, Viruses)

4. Inactivating Airborne Virus

5. Mold Control

6. Static Electricity Control

7. Energy Conservation

16
Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization-1
1- Particle Reduction
 The bi-polar process causes oppositely
charged ions to attract to particles as well as
particles attracting to each other.
 This will cause particle agglomeration,
particles decay out of the breathing range
much faster than they ordinarily would.
 The particles are displaced from the
breathing range by the ionization process.
The particles that get to the HVAC filters will
still do so, but the filter will operate more
efficiently since it will trap these now larger
particles.
 The particles that are generated from the
floor within the space are decayed back to
floor and stay out of the breathing range.

17
Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization-2
2- VOC (Volatile Organic Compound)
Control
•VOC’s are made up of complex chains of
hydrocarbons.
•VOC’s are typically off gasses from many
sources including, building materials,
furnishings, people and their activities,
combustion sources, chemical storage, etc.
•VOC’s and CO2 levels are the reason
outside air is required to be introduced into
buildings, to control these elements by
diluting
•Bi-polar ionization interacts with the
hydrocarbon chain and breaks down it’s
structure, turning something complex and
irritating or toxic into simple elements like
CO2 and H2O
•The VOC isn’t diluted or masked but is
broken down and eliminated. 18
Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization-3
3- Micro-Organisms (Bacteria, Viruses, Molds)
 These are living organisms that are detrimental
to health.
 Like all living organisms they need food and
water and seek to reproduce and spread.
 Bi-Polar ions interact with oppositely charged
elements and strip hydrogen molecules from the
protein surface of micro-organisms.
 This leaves a hole in the organism neutralizing
it.
 This will reduce bacteria colony forming units
and reduce mold spore counts and viral loads.
 The effect can be both preventative and
curative.
 Equally as effective on aerosolized organisms
and surface organisms
19
Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization-4
4- Mechanism for Inactivating Airborne Virus

The positive (H+) and negative (O2-) ions surround the hemagglutinin (surface proteins that form on
organisms and trigger infections) and change into highly reactive OH groups called hydroxyl radicals

These take a hydrogen molecule from the hemagglutinin and change into water (H2O). The ions
destroy the virus surface structure, for example its envelopes and spikes, on a molecular level.

As a result, the virus cannot infect even if it enters the body.

20
Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization-5
5- Mold Control
 Mold issues have become quite prevalent
especially with tighter construction methods.
 Bi-Polar ionization can affect mold in three
ways.
1.The spores which are particles, are displaced
from the breathing range. These are the elements
that cause allergic reactions.
2.The DNA of the spore is effected by ionization
the spore loses it’s ability to reproduce.
3.The mildew odor is a class of VOC. It is broken
down by ionization
 •Bi-Polar ionization can both help an active
mold situation as well as prevent mold problems
from occurring.

21
Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization -6
6-Static Electricity Control
Bi-Polar Ions because the end result is a
balance of negative and positive charges
neutralize static charges.
•This can range from annoying static shocks
in winter to critical control in manufacturing
environment, data centers, etc.
•Static attraction can also cause
contaminants to cling to a surface.

22
Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization -7
7-Energy Conservation
Systems use little energy, power draw for
most units is less than 50 watts. Bi-polar
systems also do not restrict airflow or cause
meaningful static pressure drop in a duct
system.
 Not only will lowering outside air effect
operating costs but tonnage load as well,
when designing a new system.
 Less outside air also mean less
introduction of particles and spores and
odorous elements from outside the
building.
 Also less outside air mean less fresh air
load ( heating and cooling)

23
AtmosAir Bi-Polar Ionization (BPI) Process
vs. Other Methods
There are many other technologies on the market that attempt to deal with IAQ (Indoor Air Quality)
problems. They all have their strengths and their weaknesses, but most importantly, NONE of them are
capable of dealing with most of all the typical IAQ problems like AtmosAir’s DBD BPI process.
