and emitted directly from lower atmosphere by
particular sources. chemical reaction.

4
Air Quality Index (AQI)

• An air quality index is an indicator developed by government

agencies to communicate to the public how polluted the air
currently is or how polluted it is forecast to become. As air
pollution levels rise, so does the AQI, along with the associated
public health risk.
• The AQI focuses on health effects you may experience within a
few hours or days after breathing polluted air

7
Philippines Clean Air Act of 1999 (RA 8749)

This law aims to formulate a holistic national program of

air pollution management and encourage cooperation in
self-regulation among citizens and industries through
market-based instruments.

8
2 types of Air Quality Standards Base on National
Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS)

Primary Standards Secondary Standards

• It applies exclusively to • These are concerned with
human health. protecting the environment
• It provide public health • Apply to property damage and
protection , including general welfare
protecting the health of • These are designed to protect
"sensitive“ population such as public welfare ,transportation
asthmatics , children , and the hazard, damage to animals ,
elderly. crops , vegetation , and
buildings.

9
The 6 criteria air pollutants (CAP), for which limits are
set in the NAAQS are:

1. Ozone (O3)
2. Atmospheric particulate matter
3. Lead
4. Carbon monoxide (CO)
5. Sulfur Oxide (SOx)
6. Nitrogen Oxide (NOx)

10
Why caring about the air quality is important?

Everyone's health can be harmed by air pollution.

When we breathe in air pollution, they can enter our
bloodstream and cause coughing or itchy eyes, as
well as cause or worsen various breathing and lung
disorders, which can lead to hospitalizations, cancer,
or even premature death.

11
Air Quality Emission Monitoring
What is Air Quality Emission Monitoring?

Ambient air quality monitoring is the process of

collecting and measuring samples of ambient air in
order to assess the status of air pollutants in the
atmosphere in relation to clean air standards and data
from previous years.

13
Why Monitoring is important?

• Hazardous air pollutants (HPA's) commonly referred

to as hazardous air pollutants are know to cause are
thought to be causing major health issues.

14
What is Stationary Source Emissions Monitoring?

It measures the levels of air pollutants emitted from

specific sources, such as factories, power plants, and
vehicles. It is used to demonstrate that a source is
meeting the requirements in Federal rules or in State
rules that are part of a State Implementation Plan
(SIP). SIPs are plans that states develop to meet the
NAAQS.

15
Common stationary source emissions monitoring
methods:

• Continuous Emission Monitoring System(CEMS)

• Opacity Monitoring Systems(COMS)
• Parametric Monitoring Systems(CPMS)
• Stack Testing

16
Effects of Air Pollution
Effects of Air Pollution

• Air Pollution consists of chemical or particles in the

air that come from factories, cars, planes and
something that is created by people.

• The effects of air pollution on the human body vary

depending on the type of pollutant and the length and
level of exposure

18
Effects of Air Pollution to Health

SHORT TERM EXPOSURE

• Increase asthma attacks
• Difficulty in breathing
LONG TERM EXPOSURE
• Increases the risk of respiratory infections - ( ASTHMA,
EMPHYSEMA )
• Heart disease
• Lung cancer.

19
Effects of Air Pollution to Environment

• Animals can also experience skin irritations and

damage to their respiratory systems.
• Plants and crops grow less when exposed to long-
term air pollution. Due to the reduction of sunlight
caused by air pollution and acid rain as well.

20
Effects of Air Pollution to Environment

When it comes to Atmosphere

• Causes Ozone layer hole

Hazardous Air Pollutants Contribution

• Acid Rain
• Greenhouse Gases(results in global warming and climate
change)

21
Technology for Air Pollution Control
What technology controls air pollution?

Renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro

power
Shifting away from fossil fuels can significantly help to
reduce the amount of pollution generated by traditional power
plants.
Electric vehicles
They produce significantly less air pollution than
traditional cars running on gasoline or diesel.

23
What technology controls air pollution?

Air quality sensors

Air quality sensors can help identify areas with high
levels of pollution, allowing authorities to take action to reduce
pollution levels.

Air quality maps

Air quality maps provide a visual representation of the
levels of pollution in different areas.

24
Indoor Air Pollution Sources
Indoor Air Pollution Sources and Control

• Indoor air pollution is created by the release of harmful

pollutants inside. These can include fine particulate matter,
carbon monoxide, and various other toxins. It is also a
concern for people living in energy-efficient homes.
• These properties tend to be relatively airtight, meaning that
the air inside can quickly become stagnant and pollutant
levels can rise rapidly.

26
Examples of Air Pollutants

• Tobacco Smoke
• Cooking Stove
• Cleaning Products
• Mold
• Pet Dander

27
Health Effects

Household air pollution accounted for the loss of an estimated

86 million healthy life years in 2019, with the largest burden
falling on women living in low- and middle-income countries.
Almost half of all deaths due to lower respiratory infection
among children under 5 years of age are caused by inhaling
particulate matter (soot) from household air pollution.

28
Guidance

It is essential to expand use of clean fuels and technologies to

reduce household air pollution and protect health. These
include solar, electricity, biogas, liquefied petroleum gas
(LPG), natural gas, alcohol fuels, as well as biomass stoves
that meet the emission targets in the WHO Guidelines.

29
Ways to Tackle Indoor Pollution

• Proper Ventilation
• Use HEPA Filters
• Use Green Cleaners
• Keep Indoor Spaces Clean and Dry
• Indoor Plants
• Use Air Purifiers

30
More Ways to Reduce Air Pollution Indoors

• Purchase and use safe building materials and furnishings

• Remove or reduce other sources of indoor pollution
• Use combustion appliances safely
• Provide adequate ventilation and filtration
• Close windows and doors when the outdoor air pollutant
level is high
