Obstacles - Spanish

Studying a foreign language is challenging in its own way; you are trying to learn
something new and different in another language! There are several facets to learning a
foreign language (vocabulary, grammar, etc.) These study tips can help overcome this
challenge:
• Learning Tips
o Write out the verb, its translation, and all conjugated tenses and forms in a
uniform box to help memorization and understanding. Here is an example:

o Use Quizlet.com to make flashcards for both verb conjugations and
vocabulary.
• Class Tips
o Be engaged! Silently answer every question that the teacher asks the class,
then listen for the correct answer from your teacher. If you’re constantly
staying engaged by mentally answering every question your teacher asks,
you’ll be reinforcing grammar, vocabulary, and general fluency.
o Translate your homework yourself, word for word. If you know what the
question says and what it is asking, you will be better able to answer it
correctly!
o Always make sure your nouns and adjectives agree in number and gender
along with making sure your verb endings match the subject.
o If you are required to free write a paragraph about something or yourself,
write it in English first and then write the Spanish version!
o Create study guides for yourself with difficult concepts like “por” vs “para”
and “ser” vs “estar.” Example:

• Outside of Class
o Listen to Spanish music and if there’s a song you like, translate the lyrics
yourself!
o Watch movies in Spanish with English subtitles, English movies with
Spanish subtitles, and if you don’t mind “voice overs” watch one of your
favorite movies but the Spanish version!
o Use the app “duolingo” for extra studying in a game-style setting.
