Despite its environmental and labour costs, shoppers love fast fashion. Will that ever
change?
Despite a negative impact on the environment and economy, people still seem to be in love the
fast fashion trend. What could be a reason for this? In this article Terry Nguyen February 3, 2020
explains the reason for this. In today’s tech savvy world people are influenced greatly by social
media which has evolved typical behavior of consumer towards fashion. But shoppers have failed
to recognize its destructive impact on the environment and planet in the longer run.
The author explains how exactly disposable fashion became a new normal for people. With boom
in technological world things became more accessible to people at lower costs, moreover with
social media on rise people tend to document their entire lives online which led to the trend of
influencers. Ultimately all this directed towards an immense change in consumer and their buying
Even though fast fashion has been successful in fulfilling the need and demands of consumers, its
negative effects are being significantly overlooked. We can’t deny the fact that fast fashion is
actually promoting a throwaway society and giving birth to a new kind of generation who are more
concerned about their ego and social appearances rather than their planet.
The front of fast fashion world might seem glamorous but what happens behind this front is
excruciating. Not only there are poor working conditions, child labor; fast fashion is one of the
major contributing factors in causing pollution and people have failed to recognize this fact. In a
world where people are trying to cut back on usage of plastic, an average American dispose off

68% of textile per year, which are made of petroleum-based fibers that don’t dispose off easily
It goes without saying that negative impact of fast fashion outgrows the positive one. Fast fashion
model has become a norm for various brands yet there still are many big brands who are promoting
sustainable fashion. I believe that this fast fashion model will fade away but it’ll be a slow process
as people are not fully education regarding this matter due to less discussion over this matter.
