The fashion industry is harmful to society and environment. Do you agree or disagree?
Firstly, there's the issue of fast fashion, which promotes a rapid turnover of
clothing styles at low prices. This leads to overconsumption, where clothes are often
worn only a few times before being waste. According to UNEP in 2019, about 60% of
materials used for the fashion industry are made from plastic. As aresult, 85% of all
textiles go to the dump each year (UNECE, 2018), which pollutes the soil and ocean.
Secondly, the new fashion trends, especially which are influenced by western
culture, are not suitable for young generations’ minds. Such new fashion trends also
affect the psychology of younger generations, and hence, if they do not get it, then it
badly affects their minds, they might become victims of psychological disorders such
as eating disorders, mental illness, stress, …. Some fashionistas tend to do everything
to follow their dream body, including working out excessively or eating unhealthy
weight-loss foods.
In conclusion, it can’t be denied that fashion industry plays a vital role in our
economy. However, it is clear that fashion industry also causes a lot of negative effect
on our society and environment. Therefore, promoting a more sustainable and ethical
approach to fashion should be done.
