REFLECTION on the Meaning and Importance of Curriculum Development

Re-thinking Education in the “New Normal”: Curriculum as Key Solution

As we adapt to thrive and push for uninterrupted learning in the new normal, we come
to realize the dynamic and ever-changing process of curriculum development to
accommodate and address the current state of the country.

Considering this, the Department of Education (DepEd), through its Learning

Continuity Plan, has carried out several adjustments on key features of the K-12
curriculum, alignment of learning materials, various modalities for learning delivery as
well as corresponding training for teachers and parents for online and modular learning
in their homes.

At a micro level, it is the teacher’s responsibility to design the curriculum with the goal
of improving student learning, amid the limited-to-no-contact teaching in the new
normal. To effectively re-design your curriculum aptly for the times, here are a few
strategies to keep in mind while doing so:

Plan, Organize and Clarify Your Goals. Place your students’ learning and experience
at the heart of your plan. This is where you identify the profile and needs of your
students. Answer the questions: 1) How can you deliver optimal learning in online and
modular modalities? ; 2) What are my specific learning goals and how can I effectively
measure their learning outcomes?

Maximize the Technology. Modern, technology-enabled communication is at the

forefront of distance learning. This is where you will have to identify if not, devise
instructional methods that shall accommodate the various learning styles of your
students. Also keep in mind the challenge of accessibility and how can you help address
it.
Transform and Check Mindsets. This is undoubtedly one of the hardest challenges the
education sector has faced in history. As you go about in designing your curriculums,
make “Mind and wellness checking” a mandatory component. This shall help you
monitor your students’ holistic learning, as well as their current state of minds.
Educators, parents and students must work hand-in-hand to find solutions and surpass
the problem we are all facing.
