Period Start-up Routines

Taking attendance, writing the agenda on the board, and reminding the students of the due date of the 1984
project and that the Mini Response is due at the end of the day.

Activity Min.

Teacher introduces the grammar unit on dashes and their uses in speech and writing. This is
done through a PowerPoint lecture. The students answer questions about dashes with the aid of 25 minutes
the teacher through the PowerPoint as well.

Teacher briefly summarizes the assigned reading of the novel, 1984, to refresh the students’ 5 minutes
memories before they complete the next activity. The teacher reviews the key events and
characters involved.

The teacher instructs each group to answer their allocated questions in writing. The teacher 20 minutes
informs them that they will review the questions together as a class after the group discussion.
Students work in groups and document their answers.

The teacher calls on each group to share their answers with the class and discuss their answers 15 minutes
with the other group and the teacher.

Students continue working on their 1984 projects with their groups or independently. 15 minutes

End of class reminders / routines ... hook them for the next class
Remind the students of the upcoming assignments and their due dates.
