Dear Governor,

Why overpopulation is not a threat to us

For many years now, scientists and liberals alike have been talking about overpopulation being a

major threat, and if the world was a certain way, overpopulation could certainly be a problem

that was creeping up on us. However, there are many studies that show why it simply is not an

issue. From, the amount of kids being born today, to the rate at which people are dying on a

global scale, overpopulation will clearly not any time soon, be an issue.

The basic way to figure this out is to look at the birth and mortality rates. It is obvious

with the advancement in science we live to be older, however the fertility rate of the world has

severely dropped. the In 2013, a large study was conducted from the time period of 1950-2010

and in that time frame it was shown that the fertility rate of the world had decreased by 40%, and

was still decreasing. What we basically have in the world right now is an overwhelming elderly

population, and they make up a good chunk of the world’s population. However, when we look

at the children population it takes a major dive in numbers in comparison to the population of

older citizens. Simply, people are not having as many children anymore. There are many

countries in the world that have realized this, many of them being in Europe, such as Germany.

The German government hands out very large checks to anyone that has a baby. This is because

their population is dropping because their elderly are dying and they don’t have young people to

replace the missing numbers. Another example to look at could be China. The Chinese

population is perhaps the largest population of one country in the world. The problem with China

is that they have had a 1 child policy for so long that everyone in China was having boys to carry

on the family name. This is going to take a huge toll on the Chinese population in years to come.
Recently, China lifted the 1 child rule to 2 children. However, this won’t really change much

because the majority of the Chinese will still be having boys.

Now, let, look to America and other parts of the world. Due to abortion and birth control, we

have seen a major drop in the population of children. This and the fact that people don’t have as

many children as they used to anymore creates a large dropoff in population numbers. In older

days people had children to help support the family, now in the modernized world that is not the

key factor that plays into having a kid, so again we see a drop in population numbers.

In 1992 there was a prediction by the year 2010 the population would be at 7.17 billion,

but when the year actually rolled around the population was at 6.8 billion. This was due to the

large drop in children population, and that was just the short term effect. In soon future years,

when the elderly start dying, The children population will have decreased even more and we will

have a large drop in population.

In Conclusion, we are not in danger of overpopulation because of fertility rate in the world, and

hopefully we won’t be anytime soon.

Sincerely,

CF
