Gear pumps and screw pumps are commonly used in maritime industries
because of its self-priming system. Self priming is an ability of a pump to evacuate
air in the suction line when the pump is about to work. They are also used for other
purposes:
1. They are normally used where the discharge rate is small to medium
2. They are popularly used for high viscocity fluids
3. They are generally used to produce high pressure in the pumping system

They also have more advantages than any type of pumps

1. Simplicity of design
2. Compactness
3. Easy serviceability
4. High-pressure and high-temperature capability
5. Precise and accurate metering

It is possible for other types of positive displacement pump to be utilized

onboard the ship.
Some positive displacement pump that can be utilized onboard the ship are Piston
Pump, Plunger pump, and Lobe pump.
1. Piston pump is commonly used in bilge or tank stripping systems
2. Plunger pump is same with Piston pump, it is used in bilge or tank stripping
systems
3. Lobe pump is commonly used in Lube oil scavenging pump and Lube oil
circulating pump
