BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade/Nevada Core Standards:


 5.K.2 With assistance, draw or communicate ideas in written form.
 1.K.5 Identify high frequency words to build fluency and comprehension.

2. Objectives:
SWBAT + Bloom’s verb
 Students will be able to write and draw their thoughts and feelings

3. Materials/Equipment:
 If I were a mermaid worksheet
 Crayons
 Pencils

4. Teaching:
A. Plan for reading the book
 The teacher will begin by gathering the students and reading the cover, author and title
 Afterward, the teacher will ask the students what they believe the book will be about
 Once students have answered the teacher will give their own prediction and begin reading
the book
 While reading the book the teacher will ask the students some questions such as:
o “What is Julian doing in this picture?”
o How did Julian feel when he saw the mermaids?
o How did he feel when he dressed up as a mermaid?”
 Once the teacher has read through the book the teacher will ask the students if their
predictions were right on the book.
 Once students have answered the teacher will explain that they will begin an activity and
will direct the students back to their desks
B. Plan for extension activity:
 For the activity the teacher will pass out the “If I were a mermaid, I would” worksheet to
each of the students along with crayons and pencils
 The teacher will explain to the students that they will have tot think about what they
would do if they were a mermaid like Julian in the story.
 The teacher will also have some high frequency words written on the board that the
students will have to use
o Swim, fun, with, could, down, etc.
 The teacher will also explain that after they thought about and wrote down what they
would do the students would draw what they thought about with their crayons.
 The teachers will also walk around the classroom in order to help students that need
assistance.
 Students will then have the option to read out loud to the class what they would do if they
were a mermaid

5. Closure:
 After students present the teacher will collect to be graded and handed back
 The teacher will then close the activity by asking the students would want to be a real
mermaid
 The teacher will also refer back to the book and say that anyone can be a mermaid and
can be a mermaid if they use their imagination and creativity like Julian.
